Toby - A Very Original 1973 Series 3 Land Rover

Toby is an eBay find that I bought unseen, but was a purchase considered by a friend at the time. He test drove him and decided to buy another Series 3.

At the time, we had just the one Land Rover (my 110) and I had been considering a Series for some time.

So I decided to buy him. And was so desperate to secure him that I ended up bidding against myself... Embarassed

Anyway, £1,400 secured him.

He's a July '73 Series 3 88" 2.25 petrol soft top. He has a genuine 61,000 miles from new and was sold to a lady in Guildford to tow her horse box. Many years later, he was sold to a few temporary custodians for short commuting purposes.

I registered him in my wife's name. That smoothed the purchase somewhat. And, other than a good service, refurbed wheels, new tyres and hood, he's largely untouched.

I say largely because, as you shall discover, he needed work of another kind later on.

But these are the pictures the day we collected him about 3 years ago.

An original, period variable intermittent wiper system!! Still works beautifully.

Original three-bearing engine.

A parking ding by one of the previous owners. Still like it now and I'm loathed to do anything with it.

Interior all perfectly original, right down to the unmarked black vinyl seats.

All very lovely.

But the original wheels were tatty and the tyres a mix n match affair. So I fitted a set of Defender steelies and normal tyres.

But it killed Toby's looks. So I had the original wheels refurbed with the correct limestone paint and period tyres fitted.

Much better!!!

And then I did something REALLY stupid....

One morning, as I did on many mornings, I took Toby to work.

But this time I didn't make it. In a string of poor decisions and badly placed cars, I hit a Nissan X-Trail up the arse at 20mph.

The Nissan's rear was a bit damaged but perfectly driveable.

Toby looked like this. Remarkably, despite pushing the radiator back into the engine, I drive him 4 miles home. Just about. Poor chap wasn't in a well state.

I literally cried when I got home.

But help was at hand and so we embarked on a project to rebuild his front end. An insurance claim would have written him off, so I paid for this myself.

But I had to learn a few new skills in order to do the job without booking him into a workshop.

It would be another three months before Toby moved again.

Hope it all went well. I miss my old series 3, I loved driving it and the back to basics mechanics and spec was refreshing compared to the computer cars out there now. Tom
