CLUNK ON SELECTING DRIVE

I currently have a situation where I select drive and get a metallic clunk from under the car and also when going from neutral to reverse. The car has done 136k and has just started doing this. I would say it is not the gearbox as I have changed the filter and renewed the oil twice in the past 6 months as a precaution and it changes up and down just fine. Also if I start the car from cold and instantly select drive it moves without a second of hesitation. I am thinking along the lines of the front prop and after a phone call to my main dealer have found out that it has never been done ! Oh and the freebies stopped at the end of January Big Cry Does anyone have any ideas ? and what symptoms if any does a failing 'splined' non UJ prop shaft give ? Is there anything else (rubber doughnuts etc) underneath which can wear and cause this noise ? As I do 90 miles per day in my car and need it for work I'm hoping it will last until the weekend when I can have a crawl around underneath and have a proper look ! The car is booked in at Land Rover next Tuesday for them to evaluate and hopefully still rectify even though the 'recall' has officially ended Whistle

No it hasn't been done - I phone my local main dealer and they checked for me.A work mate had the same noises and his went bang ! A new diff and propshaft from GKN in Hull for £400 a few years ago before the warranty work began.

Sorry to say it but my TD6 did just the same before failing on the M5 at 70mph (ish) on a rainy night! Land Rover did it for free though but it had the same symptoms...

Craig Thumbs Up

Its parked up in the drive awaiting collection by LandRover on Tuesday morning - at least if it goes on the way to the garage its in their care (its 20 miles to my local dealer). Using a VW Golf to get to work - its good but it aint no Range Rover Wink

Right - got in touch with my local Land Rover dealer ((Stratstone's in Pickering) and arranged them to pick my vehicle up and investigate afor said noise so I could report back to Land Rover customer service. Left car unused for 5 days whilst awaiting pick up and used the VW Golf (if everything was as reliable as a golf Wink ).
2 X gentlemen turned up this morning to collect my vehicle and talking to the technician he knows the fault well ! Anyway no nasty noises on set off - however 2 x corners later the diff and prop fail ! Embarassed Due to them taking ownership of vehicle they arranged recovery back to the workshop so awaiting news now )went and checked down the road and the vehicle had already been recovered within the hour) ! Thumbs Up 1 So far - full marks to Stratstones of Pickering Thumbs Up
