Shooting

Hi all ,
I am putting in for my shot gun licence and was wondering if any members knew of places that I could be introduced to to go shooting as it seems like a closed shop ? I would travel around the north west but have been up to the Yorkshire area as well with a work colleague ! Thanks Current tdv8 range vogue 07

Well, it is a bit of a closed shop because generally the estates have an established syndicate or sell whole days (rather than deliberately trying to exclude newcomers).

A syndicate will be a group who will take the majoity of the shooting for themselves and their freinds and bear the risks/costs of taking it.

When this isn't the case, or there are more days than the syndicate want to shoot, the estate will sell the whole shooting line to an individual (who then invites his guests) or to an established team of guns (who share the costs amongst themselves).

The more you shoot, the more you will meet the estate managers / shoot captains and other like-minded guns. Don't be afraid to ask about shooting opportunities. The estates will be looking for people sho can bring a new team of guns and most groups of guns need spares who can step in and pay their way when an old chum can't make it. If they like you (and you are safe, not greedy, only shoot your own birds, etc.), you will get some opportunities shown to you. Always make sure that you either pay your way or invite your host to another shoot.

However, none of this helps in the short term.

Two immediate ways in.

You can go via an agent. Roxtons are the best know but are very high end. They have some fabulous shooting. Generally you would have to take a whole day and get some other guns to come along with you.

Guns on Pegs. This allows you to buy a couple of pegs on a shoot day. You would turn up and meet a bunch of other guns. Personally, I have never done this and I think I'd take a mate as there's a risk one wouldn't get on with the others (though shooting is a very friendly sport).

For wood pigeon, you want to make friends with local farmers.

As well as getting your face know at your local clay ground, then asking people there join the Hunting life forum, as they have a section for just this sort of thing:

Just out of interest are Roxtons.co.uk/ the same people? We have a Roxtons shop in Alresford. I've been toying with getting another gun license as mine lapsed years ago. Problem is Kids arrived since then and Wifey is adamant that no guns will appear in the house. Regards

Like most things its not what but who you know. The Emporor is at one end of the scale, 300 bird days at £35 a bird, I am at the other shooting flies with a water pistol. Talk to the folks in the gun shops. If you have time to beat during the season most shoots offer a beaters day. letters not necessarily in the right order

Yes I have been told that by a mate at work where they go and beat and then get a free shot afterwards ! Just need a few ideas and hopefully get some where as too expensive to go to places like roxtons ! Just want to get out in the open and enjoy ! Current tdv8 range vogue 07

Also worth looking here "National Organisation of Beaters and Pickers Up" http://www.nobs.org.uk/ for game, although it's only clays and vermin for a while now unless you go over to the Isle of Man.
