Newbie - Some advice please

Hi

I have been looking at purchasing a 2003/2004 FFRR TD6 Vogue, and have done loads of research over the past couple of months.

I went to see a car being sold privately yesterday - 2003 Vogue TD6 - 72K miles & looking great, but had a couple of issues, the aircon was not cold at all and the LCD display beneath the Speedo/Rev Counter was knackered. It only had about 10% of pixels visible.

Does anyone here know how expensive it would be to get the LCD screen replaced?, and I realise the aircon issue could be any number of things but the owner says he very rarely has it on so it probably just needs regassing - is this expensive?

Also at 72K are there any critical pieces of maintenance that should have be carried out that I need to verify in detail? - The car had full service history - main dealer then the last 2 at a independent LR specialist. So I can ring and check but not sure what to be asking for!

Thanks a lot

Simon

Air con regassing will be about £100.

I think the binnacle fix could be an expensive one, I think someone on here has had it and done the fix, do a search for pixels and see what comes up.

Can't think of anything in particular you need to be aware of, you could ask the main dealer if it had the replacement front driveshafts done. This was an FOC replacement by Landrover to prevent the front diff exploding.

My TD6 has now done 86K and is running smoother than ever.

Just check on the service history and ask if there was anything else done, anything noted etc to be aware of. Discovery 4 HSE

Correct me if I am wrong here but may want to check that the recalls are done particularly the one for the front diff? There were a few vehicles that had issues with the front diff due to a manufacturing fault in the handover between BMW and Ford. This was rectified in the 2005 model from memory.

UKRangie,

That is the fault I have eluded to, the problem was not with the front diff it was the front driveshafts, which broke causing the the diff to explode.

It wasn't a recall as such, more a 'customer programme' and they called it the "Range Rover Assurance Programme". Actual recalls are very few and far between. Discovery 4 HSE

The air-con might just be a bigger problem than just a re-gas, If the seller doesn't use it the seals in the unit don,t get lubricated and then when it is switched on they tear. A common and expensive problem with people who don't just leave it on. 2008 MY Supercharged

OK Thanks everyone, the gist of what I am reading says the most important thing to check with dealer is the drive shaft replacement, I am correct in assuming if it has not been done it can be done now FOC?

There seem to be a lot of companies on the web who can fix the pixelation issue with a new unit - so this is a more known quantity - probably in the region of £200-£300.

The air-con could be anything from just re-gassing to complete overhaul with replacement bits needed so is the most unknown quantity and could cost from £100 - ????

Thanks again will let you know how I get on if I decide to buy.

Si

If I am looking at a 2nd hand car with no warranty I notionally 'put aside' about £1000 in my budget for things to fix or replace. I would guess this is about that worst case.

Driving the car will give you a good feeling for it. Keep us posted.

Re the FOC work on the driveshaft you'll need to speak to the Dealers and see if they are still doing it FOC. Discovery 4 HSE

For the Pixels, eBay is your friend as it's a common BMW problem, people will fix it for you:
http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=pixel+r...;_osacat=0

As for the A/C KwikFit do a re-gas for £40 that if it doesn’t work they wont charge you for, this is your first port of call before you worry about something else not working.

Are you mechanically capable in terms of basic servicing and changing brake pads etc? This will be a massive help for you financially.

Brilliant thanks everyone.

I am still trying to get a dealer to check that the drive shaft has been replaced if not then I will ask whether they are still doing it FOC. Then if ok I will get another look at the vehicle and try the ACC trick mentioned above.

Great response thanks again

FYI

I rang a dealer about the car to check whether the front drive shaft had been replaced, it hasn't, but they informed me that the work can be done at any Main Dealer FOC. Which is good news.

They broke my steering column when mine went in to have the recall done, then wanted to charge me £800 plus labour to fit. Smacked of "we have to do this for free but we'll get our pound of flesh from you"

Also at that mileage if there was a misalignment issue it would have surfaced by now - at 115k I decided not to have the work done because of the follow on problems that I would have then had to pay for.

I was told by the Dealer that if the front driveshafte WAS going to explode, it normally happens at about 60K, if it goes past this (as most did) then it should be fine. Sometimes you do have to wonder whether just leaving it alone is a better bet.

I wish I had not had mine done as it was a hassle afterwards getting diff oil leaks fixed 3 times. Discovery 4 HSE

Ok final 2 questions as I am going for a final test drive before buying!

How do I check the air suspension is working properly? (bear in mind I never had a RR before)
I take it there is a switch on the dash - how many settings are there? and can you control it from the key fob?

Also when is a cambelt (timing belt) scheduled for replacement in an RR?

Thanks

Si

You will know if it's not working because it will be pretty much un drivable. But there is an obvious self explanatory knob on the dash by the heater controls.

Make sure there are no warning lights or messages, when you first start up the message center on the instrument binnacle will scroll through any messages like, low coolant, low screenwash, light failures etc etc. If the car is already running when you get there press the right hand button on the binnacle, this will allow you to scroll through any messages. Hold it down to initiate a self test, it should say "all tests ok".

If there are messages think about them logically and adjust the value you are willing to pay accordingly.

Download the RAVE workshop manual, this also has the owners manual which you should probably speed read to get an overview of how things should work before you spend 10-15k
