While cleaning the manifold is certainly not something I'd discourage, I do think that excessive soot at WOT (and oil residue in the intake) will likely have other causes.
One thing I'd def do is replace the oil separator: there is a new vortex type of separator available from BMW. If you buy the original type from LR, just remember to replace it at oil services. There was a thread on this very recently with PNs.
As far as soot at WOT - this will likely be an injector issue. Not cheap on the TD6, unfortunately. I'd have this looked at by a specialist before doing anything though.
Craig - our little motors made 218 and 231hp from BMW with only mild changes. And in highest tune (twin register turbos), it made 272hp. Almost 100hp/L. Not bad for the little 6 cyl.
Mine is chipped to 210hp. I mentioned before that I was actually disappointed when I first drove a 3.6TDV8. Next to no soot on WOT either, btw.
