Ended up taking it to a local garage, who phoned me 20mins later to say all 4 bolts freed off, cost £20.

Took the replacement sensor off the car today. Resistance measures in high Megohms. A diode check across the terminals shows 0.7v in one direction, so looks like some kind of semiconductor in it. ... |
