I've just downloaded another iphone app and tested both in my quiet living room. Both the original app and the new app register 45db, which sounds about right according to the list.

I'll have to try the new app tomorrow to see if registers the same levels!

Fearing though, that my car is knackered!! Big Cry

Hang in there. As soon as I get mine running, I'll do the same tests with the same app.

Should have it back by the end of the week, or early next week... If they managed to get the trannie right this time...

So, finally got around to testing the noise levels in the car. Mine is a a 2003 TD6, with 20" wheels. Tests were conducted on local roads and freeways - all surfaces were in good condition. Tyres are 255/50R20 Roadstone Roadian HP - they are what came with the car - never heard of them before... Neutral

The speeds shown are common speed limits in Australia (apart from the last one) Whistle . All measurements were taken using an Iphone 4 running the 'Decibel Ultra' app. The Iphone was held about 1' above the gear shifter, and about 1' back from the dashboard when taking these readings. I was reading off the top left measurment of the app - the instantanious reading, not the average reading on the opposite side - this seemed to jump up well above what the other one was reading, and registered a top reading of 97DBa - but that was picking up our conversation.

This is about as scientific as I could do with what I have available, so I hope it helps. Green - maybe you can do the readings again to the same spec as this, to accurately compare the readings, but it does seem at first glance, that your vehicle is louder than mine - not sure why, may pay to look to see if all the sound proofing is still where it should be under the bonnet, as this seems to be where most of the noise comes from on a vehicle like this, not from the road, but that would also depend on what size an type of tyre you have.

KMH (MPH) DBa
50 ..... 31 ... 72
60 ..... 37 ... 69 - (Car had changed up a gear at this speed so it was a bit quieter)
80 ..... 50 ... 76
100 ... 62 ... 78
110 ... 68 ... 83
120 ... 74 ... 85 - (This is a bit above the legal limit Wink )

Even at 120, the car was fairly quiet - there was a bit of wind noise around the A pillars, because of a strong cross wind, but nothing annoying. A conversation can easily be had without raising your voice at all, and it would be quieter than my 2011 company car (Holden Commodore - poverty pack). Accelerating up to 100, I only got a reading of 86, so still not near the 90 mark.

Hope this helps - Gav

Hi Green, how is the noise level in the RR? Is it still going, or have you had other dramas with it? Hope it is all going well.

Cheers - Gav

My Nexen Roadians are on their way here as my old Goodyear tires are getting "on" a bit. Noise level is not a problem here (roads are crap anyway). Still on my old crappy tires the noise measurement at 70 mph was 69/70 dBa. Will do another measurement with the new tires when they get here to see if there is any difference. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Now my Air Suspension has been 'fixed' it seems to have had some effect on the sound levels. Not quite sure why, but when monitoring the levels yesterday they have dropped to around 82db at 70mph on the motorway!
