We've just done our first installation 2 weeks ago, we used Sanyo panels with a fronious inverter and a 4kw system, the fronious inverter was a bit more expensive but more efficient than some other. We will be fitting a 4kw system to my brothers house and 2 4kw systems to ours due to the angle of our roof 2006 Mercedes CLS

Forget it...the FiT (Feed in Tarrif) has been cut in half, so unless you get an installation fitted and certified by 12th December this year, you won't break even on the installation cost for about 20 years.

Don't ask me how I know about this...the story will make you cry! Current MY2020

since my post i have made many phone calls and searched muchly on the net so with a fairly knowledgeable head i will reply,

@ade, the tariff cut is common knowledge that's why there's a massive take up on installs..

@mark, sanyo panels are the best so with a fronius inverter you have a good system..did you fit yourself?

@magicbob and john, do your research, typically a 16 x 250 watt install will give you returns by 6/7 years .

@mick, british gas are one of the most expensive, 16 x250 watt with a named brand inverter can cost as low as £8500 [if you can find an installer at the moment] ... - .- -.

As for the feed in tariff, I have a feeling that next year, it may go back up. Typical of this government though, they're pushing for lower carbon emissions, so pretty much take away peoples incentive for going green. 2006 Mercedes CLS

I hope it does, but I doubt it. The Government are expecting the price of the panels and invertors to come down therefore making the new FiT more acceptable. Even the revised FiT will be subject to a further 8p reduction if your house does not conform to energy standards.

If you are going to have them fitted, get them done this month! Current MY2020

I have Sanyo HIT panels and a Fronius inverter - 3.75 kw system. I also installed Vaillant solar thermal (hot water) panels.

Solar PV will pay for itself in about 8 years. Much longer for the solar thermal unless the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is brought in in April, which given the recent FIT funding crisis may or may not now happen ??!

If you dont mind tinkering scarey why not think of using an old lister genset to generate some CHP and it will bring your costs right down, just need to fuel it with some old veg oil or engine oil which isnt to hard to come across Smile

I asked about electric or water as I did a boiler replacement at work for a small residential unit and indoor swimming pool. Couldn't justify going green with LPG (no mains gas) due to the cost of operation, so went with oil again and added solar thermal to at least demonstrate a green initiative. Expect payback to be @ 10 years.

For the swimming pool (if you own a FFRR then you have a pool, right?), we also use Heatsave Liquid Pool Cover, that can save between 15 & 40 % in heating bills for the pool water (we have to maintain a temp of @ 30 degrees C)

Fun video to watch (we don't use the fish, we just pour it on Smile)
