Germany 2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

Thanks JayGee.

Taking them apart there was a fair bit of oil where the rod comes out of the body of the shock.

I renewed them because mine needs TÜV in September and the chap testing it is a bit hit and miss at times and I don't like leaks on my L322. It's my first LR/ RR that doesn't have any oil leaks! Cool

Hi,

You can get them rebuilt by specialists, sometimes it works out cheaper, and I've not tried it for a RR but I did on my Scoobies and they worked out about a 3rd the price of new ones, plus I could tailor to my specific needs, but they were special units £600+ each.

It's basically down to corrosion, if your towers are rusty and crap condition, or bent you best just throw them away, but if your towers are good and your just seeing excess leaks or just for peace of mind you might make a good saving on rebuilding,

Bilstein offer a similar service @ https://www.bilstein-shocks.co.uk/pages/bilstein-rebuild-service

I've not tried them myself, so I have no idea of the actual costs for the rears by Blilstein or even if they'd take it on, but maybe worth someone dipping their toe.

Fronts I am not sure as they're not Bilstein but maybe they could. I've left them a post for a price for rears, I'll let you know what they come back with.

Hi,

I just spoke with Bilstein rebuild service and unfortunately the ones with reservoirs are sealed for life and not serviceable and so the only option is to replace them.

"Rear Shock Absorber LH With Continuous Variable Damping (Bilstein) LR023580 44-139872 & "Rear Shock Absorber RH With Continuous Variable Damping (Bilstein) LR023573 44-139889"

They also confirmed they highly recommend they be replaced as pairs if aged, relatively new low mileage ones can be replaced individually with no impact as they are not sold as matched pairs so there is some slight variation between units from new anyway but if more that 1 year old should be replaced as a pair.

i just replaced one of my rears which was leaking , i just bought one from a breakers for the moment as im sorting a few other things out . Its quite an easy change the only thing you may need is a second jack to put under the arm to lift it up to the shock to get the bolt level.
