Is there a point that CDs were no longer able to be played? I’m a bit old school 🤣.

That my friend is a really good question as I'm with you on still using them.

I also like the thought of having physical buttons for the controls, so it appears a late as possible pre-facelift version may be my best option, especially if CDs are still supported, although I very much doubt it.

Insurance on my D4 isn't too bad, but expecting a hike when I move on to a L405.

My 2017MY has a single CD player, I think by then multi CD changers were an option, it is probably a case of checking individual specs Only Range Rovers since 1988

My MY2015 D4 HSE Lux with top of the range(for D4s) HK Meridian entertainment has a Single CD player, and the ability to upload 10CDs to digital memory.

I was assuming that an L405 with a CD Meridian system would also have the 10CD memory.
I will only be considering cars with the top end entertainment system, as it's important to me and Lady Nasher.

Hi Nasher,
I've Had my L405 AB for nearly 5 months and found the 10 cd memory store by accident the other day, but it is the Meridian 1700W system (with the speakers in the seat backs and the roof), so not sure if all L405's have this.

Another thing I'm still not sure about is FBH remote control.

I know that all Diesel L405s will have a FBH, but I'm still unclear on my question earlier in this thread.

My D4 has timed FBH control as standard which I don't use, but I have an Altox unit plugged in which allows me full remote control via the App on my phone with the added bonus of it also acting as a tracker.
That's without starting the engine by the way, using the FBH pump to circulate the coolant to preheat the engine without running the engine itself.
I suppose I'd assumed I could swap the Altox to an L405, but perhaps not.
Sending the car a text to warm up on a cold morning whilst I eat my breakfast before going to work is a luxury I think I've got to used to now and would miss.

Thanks Goldeneye. Thumbs Up
We'll be holding out for a car with the full blown 1700W system, so that's good to know.

You might be holding out for a long time! I couldn’t find one when I was looking, so settled for the Meridian Surround. It was OK, but not a patch on the B&W system I had in my 2017 750i before or the Burmester in my current car. As you’d expect for the price of course and I guess the 1700w system will be up there with those.

My 2018 AB had a CD/DVD player in the upper glovebox, it was an option iirc. I never used it. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

I'm not seeing that at the moment Martin2.

There are at least 3 available at the moment in various places:
They are all:
4.4 Diesels
2017 - 2018
ABs in a colour I like(not Black)
With the dark interior, which is the only one I'll have.
With the full 1700W system with speakers in the roof and backs of the front seats.

Maybe it was because I was looking at late 2018/early 2019 cars?

I'd get buying if you have the choice of 3! MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

@Nasher:

I can confirm that the 2017 has the CD player, and you can “burn” the CD’s to internal memory.
Not sure how many, but someone says 10 above, should cover most trips Laughing “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

It's a real shame that in the interests of cramming as much music into a given space and the high use of streamed music, Spotify & Apple Car Play that the car manufacturers have opted to go down the MP3 route.

They should keep the CD option. Everyone who's into music knows that MP3 and streamed music is not as good a quality as a CD. Just play the same song back to back on different mediums and you'll see much clearer definition, crisper bass and near zero cloudiness of the CD, head and shoulders above MP3, even in lossless form.

You go to all the expense of paying for a premium sound system and then you feed it with a poor quality music source, what a waste.

I'll keep to the CDs banging through my H&K HD system thankyou very much, I've still got my collection that I rotate through the multichanger.

Even if I have to use my portable CD player once they delete the option, I'll feed it though the aux socket and it'll still be much better. Fuji White / Jet 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

I’m very similar. Got a LINN system at home, must be 20 odd years old now.

@Andyroo, @MJD:

Hear, hear! (quite literally, Laughing ) I concur 100% with you chaps!

This is absolutely correct, the “modern” audio sources are usually downsampled to death.

CD is only outdone by a high-end vinyl system. The other huge problem with audio quality is simply the age of the listeners ears, which begs the (typically Gremlin) question of how many on here are even capable of telling the difference, given our average age? Twisted Evil I have a very high-end audio system at home with a £10K pair of electrostatic speakers, but remain increasingly frustrated by my own auditory shortcomings as the years progress.

If the OP wants to go for the range-topping 1700W Meridian system that’s great, but just be sure the sound quality isn’t about to be completely destroyed by hidden & rotting roof drain tubes…. Shocked “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?
