2011 4.4 tdv8 high tick over and viscous fan on all the time

Wonder if anybody has any ideas on the above. I can’t find anything on the search. I drove back from town today a 15 mile journey, which I could hear the viscous fan running all the time. When I got home and put it in neutral, the tick over was at 1100 rpm. I left it running for a couple of minutes and the fan stopped but the tick over stayed up at 1100. The temperature gauge was at it usual position and I have seemed to have used more diesel than I would expect. Plugged in the gap obd tool and did not come up with any faults. Does this ring any bells with anyone? TIA

Read the live values for all temperature sensors, including transmission - I know you say the coolant temp. was showing 'normal', there will be a high temperature, or reported high temperature somewhere.
The engine cooling fan running at 100% lockup will chew through fuel like Bugs Bunny through carrots... the high tickover RPM is to aid powertrain cooling.

Best to do with a completely cold car, that way any values that are not at ambient or close to it will immediately stick out.

Thanks Phoenix for putting us on the right track. Transmission all checked out ok but turned out to be an issue with the air con. Must need a regas and comes on in auto mode. Switched off and all back to normal, big relief, thought this could be big money.

Don't assume it's just a regas as the compressor is a common fail on these cars. Plenty of info here much of it supplied by Phoenix's expertise. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Yes, could be a compressor fault, will check it out when the weather gets better. At least I can still use it just with no AC.
