Well the old girl (2012) went in for MOT and passed with x2 advisories both relating to grease on brake lines (Which i put on to stop them rotting) and that was it.

What were the advisories, and what mileage has the old girl done ?

I got advisories for 'chips in windscreen' and 'suspension component rust'. When challenged, the guy showed me a minute windscreen chip not in the driver's field of view. And they said the suspension component was surface rust on the chassis, so to just wire brush it off. The guy remarked "you'd struggle not to find a chassis with surface rust on vehicles older than about 5 years".

When I booked the windscreen company, they struggled to see the chip and then couldn't repair it anyway, because it was far too small. They said it shouldn't have been an advisory.

Re the chassis, no action taken. It's pretty clean from my perspective, and I still wonder today why if most vehicles on the road are are in the same position, why it's even an advisory. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I do sometimes wonder If they just add something for their justification?.

Yet I've seen vehicles that have passed an MOT, Having been porly repaired from accident damage & should Not be on the road, because it doesn't fall within the inspection criteria.

I bought mine with 11 months MOT and it was literally unbelievable it had passed. Likely due to a ‘friendly’ MOT tester…… 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

An 'advisory' is something the tester has noticed that is not a minor defect but may become one (or a major defect).

Windscreen chips are 'advised' or to use the certificate wording, 'monitor and repair if necessary', same goes for tyre tread depth.
The information is there to assist the driver/owner in keeping their vehicle safe & legal to be on the road in the future.
I realise there's an amount of pride in having a 'clean' MoT certificate, but given it's legal status, advisories have to be made where checked items have the possibility to become minor or major defects in the future - so there is no 'I didn't know about it' defence.

I'm (thankfully) not a MoT tester but I do work with several, what really grips their $h!t is when vehicles are presented with defects that most people know will lead to a failure - vanity plates, SRS, ABS, EML illuminated, brake wear warning, TPMS faults etc. etc. and then p!ss & moan if they're advised it will fail or has failed.

I forgot to remove my dash cam and got an advisory for it, he removed it and passed the mot, thats a bit OTT if you ask me. Also own a 1976 Land Rover 101 3.5 V8.

Depends where on the screen it was, if within the area swept by the wipers - and therefore considered to be in the drivers field of view, an 'advisory' to let you know it's potentially obstructing your view of the road would be correctly given.

Its what vosa likes to see though, they don't want to see a test station just passing through lots of vehicles with pass certs without advisories and want to see a proportionate number of failures too.

Hence my mate putting an advisory on mine one time for a 'smelly' hanging from the rear view mirror
