Shift Solenoid 2/Trans Fail Safe on ZF5HP24 gearbox

Hi Everyone,

About 6 months ago i bought an 03 L322 4.4 LPG. Absolutely love the thing but recently it keeps going into trans fail safe after about 15 minutes of driving. I changed all the oil with genuine filters & oil but it didn't fix the problem. I bought an IID tool which has already paid for itself on other things. It keeps popping with "Shift Solenoid Fault 2" i've tried looking on the internet to find one but i cannot see anything & LR want £550 for a new harness. There's no judders or clunks when it changes gear when it's not in fail safe. I was wondering if anyone knows where i can buy one so i can replace it? Or if anyone knows any alternative solutions?

Thanks

I could test your solenoid for you, although it’s probably easier just to send you one to swap out and see if the problem disappears (MV2 in the photo). It’s just as likely to be the wiring harness at fault, but substituting the solenoid is a good first step.

Brilliant! How do i go about buying one from yourself? If it was the harness are you able to just swap them out?

Many thanks for your help!

Yes, the internal wiring harness can be swapped out as well with the transmission in situ. Replacement of the solenoid and the wiring harness are both covered in RAVE so it’s a job that Land Rover even allowed their technicians to do.

I can send you a used (but tested) solenoid for £25 + postage and, if it doesn’t fix the problem, you can send it me back and I’ll send you out a used (but tested) wiring harness (£100 + postage less £25 refund on the solenoid = £75 + postage). You can also return the wiring harness for a refund in the unlikely event of it not fixing the issue.

Send me a PM if you’re interested.

If you’d rather fit brand-new parts, I can point you in the right direction for sourcing them.

Phil

Finally got round to putting the harness & solenoid in the transmission & now it's all fully working as normal. Can finally drive longer than 10 minutes with no warning sounds! Big thanks to Phil for helping & selling me the parts. Onto the rest of the list now!

sorry for dragging up an old post but ive just come across this and registered to get some info but seems i cant pm you

i have a similar issue with this, when you say wiring fault is that that a break in the wire or just dirty terminals? im going to be giving my box a flush with new filter but after reading this im not reconsidering it

its the zf5hp24 box are the wiring looms the same throughout the zf5hp24 boxes? and solenoids lie from bmws as well?

So, the shift solenoids are the three ‘brown body’ solenoids (MV1, MV2 & MV3) and the pressure regulator solenoids have the black caps (EDS2, EDS3, EDS4 & EDS5).

EDS1 is a pressure regulator with a green cap and this works the opposite way round to the black cap solenoids i.e. increasing current reduces pressure, rather than increasing it. This is used for controlling main system pressure and is designed to failsafe to maximum pressure in the event of the electrics being lost.

Your error code appears to indicate a fault with EDS4.

You can check if the solenoid windings and the wiring loom are intact by measuring the resistance between pins 11 & 16 at the 16-pin connector at the rear of the transmission. The reading should be around 5.8 to 6.0Ω

If the resistance reading is incorrect, you will have to detach the loom from the solenoid and then re-measure, to determine whether it’s the solenoid at fault or an issue with the wiring.

If it’s easier, you could also measure the resistance at the transmission ECU under the bonnet (between pins 7 & 21). This has the added advantage of checking the rest of the transmission wiring loom, too.

Identical solenoids and wiring loom were used in later BMW and Jaguar models fitted with the 5HP24, but you need to avoid very early models.

ive sent you a pm as well

so if i can measure the resistance at the ecu would this show me a wiring fault or solenoid fault if the resistance is wrong?

can you supply solenoid and loom? i did have a box change when i bought the car 6 years ago but i only know they fitted a same moel i couldnt tell what year it came from though
