You can remove the air tank very easily. It's only 3 bolts and you don't need to disconnect the air line.

You might find if you hammer the brackets upwards they will move far enough to let the bolt heads pop out through the holes.

I've just reinstalled my steps and used a very thin 10mm ratchet spanner up there by the air tanks. Took a little time - I wasn't aware the air tank came off without needing to unplug any lines so that's good info Dave Gavin

Ended up undoing the 12 mm bolts and going to town with a hammer.
