It was running. I started it and saw a 'low coolant warning' On checking the coolant I saw oil around the coolant tank and when I took the lid off more oil came out. I then started and ran the car to get it on the trailer to have it removed.

That is what happens when the oil cooler issue gets ignored.

He did say when I dropped it off that it could be the oil cooler or it could be something more serious on the engine, and he is saying that it is the engine. I have asked for confirmation that he has removed and tested the oil cooler though as it did look similar to that.

I’d want a bit more info than that, as you say. If it was driving fine, I can’t see it being engine. The oil cooler is a heat exchanger and passes the coolant next to the oil. They mix when the seal goes or the oil cooler warps…. Oil is a pretty good coolant, so you prob won’t notice anything in the short term.

Not seen oil in the coolantl before, car is on 115k and I've owned it since 49k. Oil heat exchanger hasn't been changed in that time. It was last in the garage a few months ago for a new water pump.

Agree with MJ! I'd put money on it being the oil cooler gaskets. I suspect your mechanic is either not up to speed with these engines, or is potentially trying to pull a fast one..... The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom |

Oil in the coolant is not a terminal condition. The oil runs at higher pressure than the coolant so highly unlikely coolant has got into the oil. Take off the oil filler cap and check for 'mayonaise' Nearly everyone here with a TDV8 4.4 will have had or done an oil cooler seal replacement. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |

The cooler itself can warp or crack too. I’d change that and the seals. No need to worry about it then…

When my heat exchanger went on mine it took JLR three days to get the oil flushed out of the system, I think it cost me around £800 should be less from an Indie |

He did say the engine isn't OK. I'll get more details tomorrow. He only works on Range Rovers and Land Rovers so he does know them extremely well.
