New owner needs help - RESTRICTED PERFORMANCE + GUNK

Hello all from California! This is my story of how I ended up here. *facepalm*

My husband and I bought a 2016 RRS TDV6 with 78k miles a few weeks ago. Beautiful car but sure enough, two weeks later the dreaded “Restricted Performance” message flashes across the dash screen. I thought, “Oh no big deal!” Well, husband decided to start pulling stuff apart instead of buying an OBDII after it wouldn’t start. Well, after removing everything he could except the kitchen sink, he’s stuck. He wants to just go ahead and replace the glow plugs since he’s come so far. Question: why did LR set the damn engine so far back??? Weight distribution? Obviously the average human was not meant to work on this car themselves. LOL Anyway, we discovered the black GUNK in every hole! We will attempt to clean as much as we can by hand and maybe run some sort of cleaner through the engine. Maybe. Or should we NOT do that?

As to the glow plug replacement, we are struggling. He can’t get to more than two or three of them without removing a load of parts that don’t seem like they should have to be removed just to perform regular maintenance. Is there a tool that makes this easier? What about the injectors? Basically he wants to take care of all the likely culprits of the CEL while it’s torn apart. We’ve googled and not come up with any exploded views of the engine which would make things easier.

Thank you in advance for any advice!

Yes, a Sport. Sorry, I did do a keyword search and glanced at the different forums but somehow I missed all the wonderful tutorials! Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!

Ours came from NY originally. For now, however, diesels are still sold here but in 2035 no gas and diesel powered vehicles will be sold in CA. Neutral
