Thanks guys. I think I’ll just check the soot levels every few weeks so that I can make sure it gets a good run once the readings are higher. Good excuse to take it for a proper run out.

A…Wales,
If you contact Pat at GAP he will probably give you access to update your iid to include the Forced Regen option.
I find this works brilliantly for me.
I visit my daughter each month , the journey is mainly motorway 70+ miles, so perfect for a good DPF clean out.
The forced regen can be started at any soot level rather than waiting for 19g + level to initiate an Active regen.
I usually force a regen on the return trip, then I know it’s good for any type of use for the next 2- 300 miles.

*** UPDATE ***

Update to my DPF red triangle

Rang RAC to see if they could clear but they couldn't but RAC man recommended a local garage K-Tech Automotive
Local garage in Bretton.

Originally I was quoted £250 but they would take the filter out and clean them and have to do an oil change and filter change could take 2 - 3 days as they were busy.

Left the car yesterday, picked up load car RAC had arranged this morning. Lunchtime had a phone call telling me the car was done and oil didn't need changing but recommended in within the next 5K run but cost was £120. Took the car for a good run 40+ mile round trip to Huntingdon and back and no errors turbos working sweet and no lag.

Garage very polite explained what they did think he said it had 60+mg?

But would recommend to anyone!!.

Hi John,

It sounds like they ran a forced regen / red reset
The DPF filter doesnt really come out, it requires cutting the exhaust off and re-welding it back on (or using sleeve clamps). It is quite a big job while a regen is a 20 minute thing.

With a bit of luck sounds like you are sorted. Let us know!

DPF still going strong

Almost a month now and car still running perfectly. Not really been out of town so DPF been up twice and immediately been on the motorway to clear it and within 20 minutes its gone. Not risking it again!! Loving the car but reading some issues some have had when MOT comes up I am panicking. This is 11 years old with 181K on the clock, passed its MOT in Nov so may sell it soon as everything works perfectly, best sell before anything goes wrong. Maybe see if I can buy a younger version. 2011 4.4TDV8

Hi all,
Jumping on this thread for a quick question… as the experts are watching!!!

I was on a road trip and checked my DPF soot level using my IIDTool.

I was cruising on the M11 at around 75mph and had around 9g of soot, but noticed it was climbing quickly. I was a little worried at the speed it climbed, but then it dropped Shocked
Throughout the time I was monitoring it it varied (slowly) between 8.5g and 9.5g

Is this normal? I was using the cruise control, but didn’t notice the coronation between these figures changing and the engine load (I.e going up or down hill) Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

No yellow lights, just trying to track down poor mpg on my car. I’d like to know if it’s excessively regen’ing… or at least eliminate all things DPF from my investigations! Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

There are a lot of factors and behaviour varies. I have spent 3 years monitoring it and getting a handle on it.

Dr Rob's advice is good. If no Yellow warning light then leave it.

If you really want to figure it out, add the "Number of Demanded Regens" field (not "Successful Regens") which is not robust data. Then graph your mileage per regen, or at least get a handle on it.

Avoid, like the plague, people who tell you something is wrong with your car. They are usually basing their conclusion on their own cars and driving habits. The variation is massive. I have spent time on this with a) a LR Chief Tech of 20 years. b) One of the UKs best Diesel 4x4 modification specialists c) Some of the original L322 design team.

The long and short of it is DPF technology was new when they started producing this "environmentally friendly" solution. It is a bit of a bodge, exacerbated by the EGR and sequential turbos. Modding a 4.4, EGR delete and DPF removal is a bad idea. I personally think re-maps are a bad idea too but I fully accept there is some wiggle room there.

We had the engine out last year too. Basically a full rebuild because of this problem. My MPG on the dash is 22mpg local driving and 32 motorway but when I brim the tank it and calculate it manually the average it is always 20-22mpg irrespective of type of driving.

Excessive regens will not adversely affect your fuel economy - it is only an cupful of fuel that gets dumped into the DPF for a burn. How do I know this? I had excessive regens previously. My MPG was constant before and after. I had a full DPF clean too, it made no difference whatsoever. Terraclean? nothing - you may as well tap dance in sequinned hotpants and rollerblades for all the difference it makes... I had every injector off and sent back to Bosch. Turbos apart... I'll post a full list at the bottom.

I am fairly certain I am the only person here who has ever replaced a DPF and Cat on an L322 with new. My AB was ultra low mileage (40k now) from the Isle of Man and a peach.... except I discovered it had been driven through a deep salt water ford then left to stand, damaging the DPF and Cat from the inside. This caused me to do massive analyses, all the while being wrong-footed by well intentioned (but ultimately wrong) people who based their conclusions on their own cars and driving habits. I also know a DPF almost never breaks. The DPF itself is just a ceramic gauze and DPF issues are a symptom of another problem. We also identified another suspected issue. If that's not all crazy enough for you here's where it goes into another layer of Inception... in 2011-2012 it is "known" there were a number of substandard batches of steel sent to Ford from China, which we suspect my DPF and Cat were made from. - the 4x4 modification guru mentioned above knows and has experienced greater corrosion on some Ford sourced parts for around that time than should reasonably be expected.

However, with this damaged DPF my car would run ok most of the time as long I was not in heavy traffic. It would regen at any speed. The algorythm works so the frequency of regen increases. I have had the original design brief explained.

Your car sounds fine. Start graphing it if you really want to get a handle on it....

Many thanks for the replies DrRob and Range Rover L322

You have certainly spent a lot of time, money and effort on this one! I am definitely taking on your advice and am not going to go down that rabbit hole!

One point that stands out for me is the mpg vs actual mpg. You claim to be able to get 22 to 32 mpg on the dash but calculated is 20-22. While I struggle to get 32 on my dash (although I am pretty sure as to why that is) I’ve started tracking my fill ups and this mornings calculations for the last few fill ups also shows 20-22 mpg.

So maybe I am chasing a problem that doesn’t exist… Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

The trip should be pretty accurate vs calculated. The ECU is programmed to be 7% optimistic but you can reset this with the GAP IID tool and mine is now within <1mpg of the actual measured mpg. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

On the MPG issue, if I reset my trip on the motorway, the dash will read 40mpg.

I checked it manually for a year I just get 20-22... which I've accepted and not going to chase that any more.

The thing about these cars is they are so completely excellent but prone to variation in performance and build that it is easy to start chasing ghosts....

Dr Rob explained to me early on not to fix something that wasnt broken as it can create more problems than it solves... 2012 L322 4.4 TDV8 AB low mileage - a peach
