New owner, tons of questions.

Hi All,

Just slapped down a deposit for ‘11 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography. 125K miles, FSH by dealer, immaculate. Collecting next week.

Will get extended warranty to cover all eventualities, but EGR’s replaced, as well as both turbos. Gearbox fluid flush will happen before I take delivery.

My plan, modify it into an Uber capable and comfortable overland vehicle. I have. ‘10 90, which has been extensively modified, which will probably get retired / sold in due course, partly because of space for more gear.

I’m going to add a dual battery system, redarc, 1000W Inverter etc, replace the audio head with a apple CarPlay until and try and bring the tech up to date a little.

So, questions, if you don’t mind please.

Roof rack, G4 style, obsolete? Alternatives people use? I have a iKamper Mini RTT that will need to go up there, so needs to support the weight.
Winch bracket, does the ‘03/‘09 bracket fit ‘11 models?
Soft A Bar, same question, will they fit ‘11 model?
Compomotive 18” wheels, who has them, tyres you are running? Thinking BFG AT’s
Johnson Rods / lift kit, yes, no? Seems to be the way to go to get more ground clearance.
Rock sliders, sump guard, who has them, what make? I have only seen prospeed.

Will be documentation build over the winter, ready for a June 3 week Pyrenees adventure.

Thanks in advance

here is the defender, sorry to cross post Smile

Welcome to the 4.4 tdV8 club, you will love your new ride on your long expeditions. and I will really enjoy following your posts as you adapt your new L322.
Just sorry I can’t answer most of your questions, but I am sure others will be along with help.

The very large 6 pot Brembo brake calipers are going to limit your choice of wheels that will fit .

Also I saw an L322 parked up quite a while ago that was fitted with a purpose built roof rack very similar to what you will need. I was so impressed with how neat, but strong that it looked I jotted down the manufacture from a badge on it.

Look up Bolton Roof racks.I am sure they are worth a phone call to see what they can do for you.

Thanks Mike Thumbs Up

Compomotive’s fit, I’ve checked and double checked they will do the job.

Will see what advise pops up from other like minded owners, meanwhile, more reading of posts.

I think the Compomotives are the only 18’s that fit over the Brembos.

There was never a winch mount or a soft A bar made for the last facelift L322. You will have to adapt something from the earlier models, but someone on here may have done it before.

Can’t help with the other bits I’m afraid.

Sounds like you have an interesting project and I too will look forward to reading about it.

There was a thread on here a while ago (more than 5 years) of a couple who took a L322 down through Africa and gave good tips on their equipment and experiences. Cant put my hands on it but do a search on here. Thumbs Up

Winch can be fitted, with some modifications, I carry a hand winch in the D90, it has pulled it out of thick mud, but they don’t compare weight wise, so that is the only concern.

Will go up on the YouTube channel early next year as the mods start to be fitted.

Johnson rods - don't bother. Invest in a GAP IID tool (which will pay for itself very quickly!) and adjust the suspension heights with it. Bish.

All the early stuff will fit, it will just need modifying and you may lose adaptive cruise and parking sensors etc...

Finding the stuff is the hard part, if I was doing it again I think I'd make it all from scratch, not too hard if you know your way round a welder.

I know a good fabricator in Doncaster, a hike from you but worth it as much cheaper than London prices, he makes roof crates for tents...

My tyre of choice would be Maxxis, they are a lot stronger than BFG's which have paper sidewalls compared to them.

Can't remember off the top of my head the size but they were 32" tyres and fitted with only minor mods...

I'll third the IID tool but don't jack it up too much in off road mode as you run out of travel and will blow a bag...

I had fatty offroader set up to be at off road height when in "normal" mode and off road mode was a couple of inches higher, that way you can drive at any speed at the original off road height which is fine for normal off road use...

Check out fatty offroader build thread, a lot of the pics have gone but the info is still there... link in my signature strip...

Have fun... Thumbs Up

 Pete

Thank you!

Will do some more digging, agreed, finding stuff is hard, but, where there is a will.

Got a diag OB tool for the Defender that has the L322 on it, so good to go on that front. Easylift looks like an interesting module for air suspension lift.

Boove ordered too.

Updates as I proceed Check out my YouTube channel

Replacing the head unit with an Apple Car Play unit might be more difficult then you think as the head unit is also the controller for the fibre optic ring that connects all the modules in the boot.

I guess it depends if you want to keep any of them functional and if there's any functions on the old screen that you want to retain access to such as adjusting the analogue clock, and accessing any of the features such as timed climate, vision assist cameras (if fitted), etc.
