Had my air con re-gassed today and was told that the pulley belt isn't turning the air con pump but the belt is still in place?

Anyone had this ?

If it's the tensioner pulley is it a big Job? Is it a DIY job? CURRENT : FFRR 2012 4.4 TDV8

When I got my TD6 the pulley had siezed. I could not get it out so it went to my mechanic and in the end he took the compressor off

Easy job. DIY! They use a sprung loaded shock the thing to keep constant pressure and tension in the belt.

Check the tensioner (number 2 below) is working properly as they are a common fault

if the tensioner is seized then the belt wont be turning right?

And as for a DIY job - ive had a look and it would seem a whole lot of components - rad e.t.c. need to come out - or can it be done from beneath? CURRENT : FFRR 2012 4.4 TDV8

You can access from underneath by removing the front guard first.

Is this the thing that is supposed to go click when you turn on the A/C?

I regassed last year (500kg ! for those who remember ) and have been running with the A/C across the winter for Dan

However, with this warm spell, not getting any cooling.

Listened in on the engine bay, with son pressing the A/C switch and no click, so sounds like I'll have to dive underneath and have a tinker.

Had the same problem when I bought the car 3 years ago.... .

You must have a leak in the system Joe90, most probable culprit is the condenser

Not been using the FFRR due to good weather, but took the opportunity today to dive underneath and see what was going on.

1. Belt tensioner in "on" position all the time, whether aircon switched on or off, is that right?

2. Can move the belt tensioner so its not seized (using an extension bar)

3. Still not hearing a click when the aircon is switched on (entertained my daughter who was sat in the drivers seat, whilst I was waving a feather duster to indicate my need for the aircon to be swtiched on or off )

4. Stuck a screwdriver into one of the aircon nipples, a small "pfff", then nothing, so I guess I have no gas, hence no cooling!

5. Off to KwikFit or I'll get a mobile chappie round at work next week .

dont know about 1 and 2 joe,
number 3 , priceless memory

number 4, to the left of the rad is a tube with a valve , take the rubber cap off and press the valve insert, if nothing comes out then there is no gas in the system..re-charge and it should be ok..i did all this and mine seems to be ok now.. ... - .- -.

The click you can hear (or cant) is the A/C clutch locking or unlocking. This is on the face of the A/C Pump itself.

As you say, drop it down to KwikFit and get them to do their re-fill as they dont charge if it doesnt work. Or a mobile guy might actually know what he's doing and find your leak for you...

If you do get KwikFit to do it, ask them "Will your machine detect a leak?" then when they say "yes" you can then get your money back if all the gas leaks out next week.

I have had a similar problem. mine was as follows. the air con compessor has a magnetic clutch which pulls an outer cover pulley inwards on the compressor to drive the inside shaft of it. when looking at the comp pulley you should see a central bolt head. a common problem is this bolt comes loose and the front of the pulley falls off. mine was still sat on the bottom cover and simply bolted back on. if you look at the pulley and can see a threaded hole youve lost the outer clutch pulley.The picture in the earlier post showing the compressor shows a small circle in the centre of pulley this is actually a hexagonal bolt head. I think you will have to buy a new pump if the cover is lost as it is not available seperatly. I would get a cover from a breakers,much easier than changing the comp. Adam.

Slow worker but finally got air con looked at (after the hot weather in April things cooled off so not needed ). Turns out I have a leaking condenser (explains a lot!) so getting a new one, then will get gassed up. .
