Ash, as Head of Aftersales at a main dealer I hear you. We can't get it right all the time, but you touch on a good point; if things go wrong, and sometimes they do, it's often a breakdown in comms that is the root cause. That said, sometimes the expectation of the customer can be unreasonable. As you can imagine, in the current climate with staff either furloughed or off self isolating, or sick (Sometimes with no notice), it really can be backs against the wall time trying to accommodate a lot of additional work with no notice. We're fortunate in so far as we almost have more work than we can deal with, whereas other workshops I've been speaking with are struggling to justify staying open.
I think what I'm trying to say in a long winded way is I can see it from both sides; you as the customer not knowing what was going on, and the garage trying to juggle all their work commitments. That said, if they told you to bring it down and made a booking to that effect, then they can't really say they were unprepared....
On a separate note, and I get this a lot; this whole 'Can't you just plug it in and tell me the fault' is just unrealistic. If for example your ABS warning light is on the the fault code is 'N/S/R wheel speed sensor signal implausible', chances are it's going to be a N/S/R wheel speed sensor. If however you have a lack of power or EML light on, you could get for example 'Bank 2 O2 sensor signal implausible', that could be anything from an air leak upstream of the MAF sensor, to the O2 sensor itself, and anything in between, not to mention complete curve balls like a dual mass crankshaft damper beginning to separate causing erratic timing. misfires, and go knows what all else. Unfortunately the days aren't here yet whereby you can plug it in and a big magic arm points at the faulty component.

Oh no I get that. I dont expect an answer that says it is this or that then it he somethimg else. For the last 3 months since I owned it thats what I have had....

However you cant be that busy if you are able to answer the call and if customer says you had the car for 5 days can you update me....saying its on the ramp....that cant be acceptable???

We all have SLAs or timeframes to work towards. Surely they dont want to have acar up on the ramps for 5 days with no notes on it whatsoever. Surely a.... sorry sir let me put you on hold...walk over tp the guy operating the ramp and say whats the update. Cant be that hard?

It might take a month or two to fix I get that but more context wouldnt hurt.

Hats like someone asking me for an update on a piece of work I am doing and I say something like..... errr its on the computer all I can tell you!!!

I now think maybe nothing has been done on the car or they don’t communicate internally which for a small garage that they are I would be surprised.

I am not beating them down as I had them recommended highly on here but a ....its on the ramp is hardly a good reply imo Current Cars

And I'd have to agree. There's all manner of possible reasons why you haven't had an update, and unfortunately a lot of them aren't good. However, it's not for me to speculate on another workshop's operating practices, and I would hope there's a perfectly good reason. Let's just hope you get a result without too much further delay.

The worst bit was the silence... it is on the ramp.

Silence.....

OK errrrr will you call me then?? Ha now I have calmed down I will wait and see but yes your right. How hard can it be while im on the phone to say ‘oh gee yeah we been swamped or we dont have the foggyest but are still probing’

My fear is when I dropped it off it is down a side alley feom a residential road. When I pulled in I see there were a few range rovers parked on the normal road. So wouldnt want it parked there and forgotten Current Cars

All I can say is mate you'll get an answer regarding the car. I've been there in the past when I was having the gearbox sorted n all they got was phone call after phone call. Just bear with mate n it will be sorted that's all I can say. A lot of the ones that are outside are normally waiting too be picked up or the owner has run out of money to fix it

I suspect after this that you'll be finding another garage. You're right in that it doesn't take a moment to ask whoever is working on your car or who has been working on your car for an update that they can pass on to you while you are on hold. Hopefully you'll get a more positive response soon that will put your mind at rest 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

Totally. I know they will be busy. Its not a bashing as I know they will be snowed under and working hard on the cars. The recommendation is still appreciated. Just hoped I would have had a bit more info from the guy on the phone. Not a witch hunt at all. Hopefully mine wont be one of the cars left as I have run out of money ha.

No need for a new garage just yet. I am hopeful they can fix it. Destressed now. Just awaiting a positive call would be a nice end to the day. Current Cars

Update Sean just called from the garage. Potentially it is an injector on bank 2 so they are checking

They did compression test and it came back OK

I had compression test done before which came back OK so knew well almost knew that was correct

Had injectors changed but... I think my garage only changed and hen on bank 1 so.... injectors on bank 2 hopefully. I have injectors at home but not with the car which is a pain. Rather not buy more of what I have.

Will update once I have more info. Current Cars

Maybe. Surprised as all error codes said bank 1. Other garages have said bank 1. Maybe and I am no mechanic but if the previous owner had stripped it all down and put it back together and mixed up some bits would that show an error on bank 1 but really it is bank 2. Doubt it would but if its bank 2 maybe where the errors were showi bank 1 and my mechanic only done work on bank 1 could be why errors are still thereif that makes sense.

If it is an injector thenI would be over the moon. Current Cars
