Full Filter And Fluid Service Done - Nearly

So having recently acquired my L405, even though it has full main dealer service history, apart from the last one in Feb 2020, for piece of mind, I replaced all of the fluids and filters.

Yesterday I changed:
Both air filters (2 x Mann C35126)
Fuel filter (Mahle KC521)
Engine oil and filter (Shell Helix AF-L & Mahle OX153/7D2)
Transfer box fluid (Smith and Allan 0753 transfer fluid)
Front and rear diff oils (Smith and Allan Geartech fully synthetic 75w90)
Dynamic response reservoir and fluid (Genuine LR reservoir & Smith and Allan Cold Climate PSF)
Cabin filter (Mahle LAO490)

Just the gearbox fluid outstanding, which I'll do at least a triple drop and refill next weekend. I would have done it this weekend but I'm still waiting for my 20 litre drum of Mannol AG60 to turn up from Germany.

What I couldn't believe was that the diff oil according to the service schedule is 160k or 10 years Shocked Whilst mine wasn't the worst I'd ever seen, I certainly wouldn't like to keep in there for another 100k!

The intention is to keep up my preventative maintenance regime through changing the engine oil and filter every 6 months, single drop and refill of the gearbox and dynamic response fluid every year with diffs and transfer box every 2 or 3 years. I think that should stand me in good stead for the future, fingers crossed. Kev

That's only for the rear locking diff, Stan. For open diffs, it's 10 years or 160k. Kev

Agree with your service strategy, too often better than take a chance. I’ve seen them really bad at 50K, but just changed all my fluids at 60k, the diffs were perfect, but the T/F box was very dark and looked well used so glad I did it Thumbs Up

Yeah, I agree, Dave. My diff fluid had life left in it and so did the transfer box to be honest, but it just makes me feel a lot better having nice, clean, slippery goodness in there. Kev

Interesting because certainly if you have an 80k service at a main dealer it looks like you'll get the diff oil changed regardless of open or locking.

Reason I say this is mine (open diff) went for its 80k service at the main dealer earlier in the year and the fixed price servicing had the Rear Diff oil change as a service item and the oil was priced into the service. When I picked it up its listed on the invoice as having been done so I was going to query your comment earlier about it only being the Locking diff needing the oil changed.

So I dug the paperwork out tonight and at first glance on the 80k service schedule the mechanic ticks it says - Renew differential oil - it was only just now when I read it a bit closer and it says RENEW LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL OIL. It was still done and invoiced though. Current Fleet:-

That's interesting. I assume because it was built into the fixed price servicing, they just changed it anyway. I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience?

According to the service sheets on the wiki, it's definitely 80000 miles / 60 months for the rear electronic locking diff and 160000 miles / 120 months for the front and rear non-locking open diffs...

So, my 20 litres of Mannol AG60 turned up this week from Germany and this morning I braved the rain and replaced the fluid in the gearbox.
I always buy my ATF from these guys because their prices are excellent. £72 in this case, including delivery. https://www.motor-oel-guenstig.de/

As we know, due to the majority of fluid residing in the torque converter, only a limited amount of fluid can be drained from the drain hole. In my case, bang on 3 litres.

I ended up draining and refilling the gearbox 4 times. Priming the gearbox in between each fill by:
- Starting the engine and holding my foot on the brake
- Shifting to reverse and holding for 5 to 10 seconds
- Shifting to drive and holding for 5 to 10 seconds
- Shifting to 2nd using the paddle shifter and holding for 5 to 10 seconds
- Shifting to neutral, then releasing the brake and holding the revs at 2000rpm for at least 30 seconds to fully fill the torque converter

Fresh oil is shown at the top. First drain is on the left and fourth drain is on the right. Obviously the oil in the gearbox now will be a shade lighter than the one shown on the right.

I could have done a few more drain and refill cycles because I have about 8 litres of clean fluid left. However, I got a bit too wet in the rain and thought I'd save the fluid for a refresh next summer, when it's a little warmer outside. Very Happy

Hopefully that should keep the gearbox in good nick for a while Thumbs Up Kev

Thanks all for the info. I have two questions:
1. Has anybody changed Dynamic Response Filter, in the manual, it recommended to change it every 5 years, I wasn't able to find it
2. How to change Fuel Filter, where to locate it? Manual says change every 10 years, is it worth of changing at 55K?

Thanks
