td6 oil in expansion tank

morning folks ,
while out checking a few bits on RR I noticed there was quiet an amount of black oil in the expansion tank.
oil level has dropped no signs of water in the oil or on oil cap,
is there anywhere else oil could get into the cooling system a part from head gasket failure on the m57?
roughly how many hours are in doing the head, rough cost?

I’m not an expert, so might not be related in any way..... have you changed the crankcase breather or replaced it with a vortex one from a later BMW?

Usually gets missed when servicing.

More knowledgeable folk along soon.....

The filter one can get blocked, not sure if that would then send oil where it’s not supposed to be. Fit a vortex one and you will never have to change it again.

2004 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Giverny Green

There's an engine oil cooler bolted to the rear of the oil filter assembly. It's a plate heat exchanger, engine oil on one side of the plates, engine coolant on the other side of the plates. It's not inconceivable one or more of the plates has corroded through allowing oil to mix with the engine coolant.

that seems like my first try in morning, the oil cooler looks like sh17 from the outside if that's anything to go by hah a

thanks for the replies , after popping off the oil cooler and a few choice words the problem looks like the oil cooler gave in.
now the fun part of flushing out the cooling system

I have found the best thing to clean oil out the rad is a tin of petrol injection cleaner, start by flushing the rad out as best you can then fill up and add the injection cleaner run the engine till it is properly warmed up, flush rad again several times with clean water follow up with some proper rad flush (yes its a lot of flushing) and the cooling system will be cleaner than a clean thing on cleaning day, over the years I have had this job on several different cars and it works a charm.
