I've just removed my side steps due to them being rotted, what is the general opinion on where to get replacments?
There's sets on ebay for as little at £150.00 and others on there ranging around £300.00.

aftermarket ones wont be as good as OE but are acceptable...

the ebay steps do attract rust so i'd paint the underside with a few coats of hard wearing paint before fitting...



or, you could spend a bit more and go 'deployable' ... - .- -.

I'll take a punt at the ebay ones then its not a lot of money if they are still usable and look good.

Ide gladly pay the extra for deployable but honestly don't like the look of them I prefer the chunky fixed steps.

I bought a set from turborevs £130 and so far so good I fitted them in 2017

I compared them in the post and I found the cheap ones are perfectly acceptable but I did give the undersides 2 more coats of paint.

Those ones you've ordered look perfect. Just paint the undersides. I used Hammerite just because I had some but next time I will get canned stonechip and do it even better. When the mounting brackets are off it's a good opportunity to clean the mud out of recesses at the front. There was a good pint of mud in both sides of mine. Good luck!

The plan is to remove the arch linings,sill covers and as much underside covers as possible to shot blast and then rust proofing including waxoiling the inner sills

sounds like you're doing a great job - please photograph and post ! We love it!!

It's amazing that such new cars need such a level of work to keep them rot free. The side steps on mine were in similar condition and under them I have also found a few areas that the original underbody protection has chipped away in so will now be cleaning down and protecting them.

It is Matt, I don't mind the maintenance/ mechanical works but land rovers rust proofing is terrible we've got a few volvos some nearing 35yrs old and none have the same amount of rust a 9yr old land rover has.

Thankfully it will all be caught in time and correctly prepped and proofed meaning no further issues and should be done for life.

That's amazing! I really like the old Volvos, I'm yet to own one but have great memories of being a passenger in a few 240s when they were newer. Definitely a car on my ownership bucket list.

What will you use to prep/coat the underside of the Range Rover? I was reading up on different systems last night but a recommendation based on experience would be great. I have previously worked with bare metal but I'm conscious I can't guarantee removal of every spec of rust with this so want to use the right combination of products to account for that.

I normally get back to bare metal then red oxide, seam sealer and stone chip after that normally go over with the car colour but for the range rover I'm not going that into detail
Plan of attack is
Get down to clean bare metal
Red oxide
Seam sealer
Stone chip
Wax oil external

Also inner sills wax oil.


I've done this method a fair few times and never had any issues.

This is the T5r I did about 6 years ago and still in good condition

The plan of attack sounds good. I wish I had some indoor space for the job, but ramps on the drive will have to do. At least the car will provide shelter from the rain!
