First Signs of Rust!!

Just spotted this today Big Cry :

(If you can't identify location, it is passenger side rear quarter panel, just above the mudflap.)

My FFRR is Apr 02, so an early one, guess I am leading the field on this one Laughing

Not had a chance to look inside the boot area and have a peer in-between all the gizmos (bike rack preventing boot access today), or to check for damp in that area, or if there is a mud trap underneath.

Yes Dan, I do have the air con on every now and then Smile .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

I have some similar bubbles under the plastic trim that surrounds the windows. unsure if I can get rid of them.

You may joke - but you know it's true Cool

Check your rear wheel arches, where the door shuts, but on the oher side. These were never protected and the water/muck from road strips the paint right off Sad

I wonder if it's had a dodgey repair there in the past? The paint looks a bit un-even, it's not unheard of for damage to occur in the factory/delivery and be patched up prior to going on sale.

Mine had this when I bought it, plus some rust at the top where it meets the D post cover. My body shop mate stripped it back and found it was due to a poor quality repair at some point in its past.
I dont think it is double thickness/ seams here- on mine it was in good order behind. What is the other side like in the same spot?

is this the trim at the 'top' of the door (below the glass?)

if so i've got 'bubbling' underneath three of the windows

its basically a plastic/rubber sleeve over a metal 'core' - so moisture gets underneath and it rusts from the inside - appearing as bubbles

i am replacing all mine - cost £126 from Yeovil Land Rover (recommended on here for discount parts)

I was thinking that the vast majority of RR panels were aluminium and so not easily rust prone ,so are the rear panels just 'standard' metal then? Steve

On my 2002 L322 I have exactly the same rust spots on the nearside rear quater panel. I had it checked
by Guy Salmon Land Rover Coventry Body shop. The chap who did the assessment said he had not seen this before and without removing any paint guessed that it probably was due to a repair job.
I have had the car for three years and this rust has only recently appeared. Wheather or not you have the air con. on or off I doubt that it would have any influence in this area.

Wash your mouth out! Of course the aircon being on is the answer to everything! Ask Dan. Lol

The rust burst through at the weekend, so will have to see to it now .
