Engine system fault

Hi there. I would like to ask some advice. I am currently preparing a recently purchased 2009 tdv8 for a long trip to the north of Australia . The. Car has been driving beautifully until today when I had the 2 chimes and the engine system fault warning come up. Luckily I hadn’t departed for the long drive yet . The engine is now in what I believe to be a limp mode and is very lumpy on start up. It was pretty scary as I was on a narrow steep incline and loosing power .
I’ll have a gap 11D tool arriving in the next few days hopefully but would like to hear what are the most likely causes so I can prepare and order parts.
Many thanks , I’m kind of in a bind now and not in the good books with the better half after convincing her it would be a good idea to come with me ...

This is my first ffrr after driving a d2 td5 for the last ten years. I must say it is a massive upgrade in ride quality. 3.6 tdv8

..... top inter cooler hose. Thumbs Up

Best place to start

Whip it off - 2 hose clips

Check for splits under the webbing. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thank you . I have removed the top hoses and they seem good and pretty new looking. I am currently going right through all wiring connectors . I did find one connector to the driver side egr valve seemed to be not fully connected so I pushed that one together, reconnect the battery and started it up. No engine fault but chugging slightly. Kind of feels like an injector or 2 not firing .

Well, I have today removed the inlet manifolds, found one hose clamp that had seized up and was not tight and I thought I had found the problem, new hose clamp. But after checking every connection and putting it all back together she is running rough as guts.

I’m thinking it is a fueling problem as that is just how it feels . I haven’t changed the filter yet as I don’t have one with me here but I was wondering has anyone here experienced a blocked filter on a l322 tdv8 or a failing fuel pump. Did it show an engine system fault or was there a a different warning?

I’m hoping my diagnostic tool arrives in the nex day or 2 to help me solve this, I’m having to borrow a ford territory to take my girlfriend to the airport.

Any help really appreciated !! Cheers

Ok so today I changed the fuel filter and confirmed I have fuel flow at the filter. I also accessed the top of the fuel tank and listed to the fuel pump. It’s much quieter than the one in my discovery 2 but seems like it is operating correctly. I then tried to start her up, yes it started but running extremely rough with a lot of blue/grey smoke . I am now begging to think I have a serious problem like turbo failure or injection pump . Thanks to Australia post and Easter holiday my iid tool hasn’t arrived so I am stabbing in the dark a bit . The few hundred km I drove it were fantastic though so I better be able to fix it

Unfortunately my plan of driving to Darwin has vanished as I have to get back to work.

Has anyone here had a turbo failure on one of these? What was it like ?

A Trap 

turbo issues don’t normally cause rough running, lack of performance from seizing vanes or shaft and or oil smoke and leaks.

Give it a good service and cleaned your MAF sensors, then read your codes

Hi again, well here i am onboard my flight back to Darwin having left my L322 at my brothers place. I still haven't figured out what went wrong with the motor so to recap here is the story so far.
I bought this 2009 3.6 TDV8 Autobiography pretty cheaply to be honest but it does have high milage (250k km). I have been looking for one for ages as my TD5 D2 is pushing its limit towing my boat. There are zero available in Darwin so when this one came up in my brothers home town i thought it was a good opportunity .

I had my brother look it over, body 9.5 out of 10 as with the interior and after a test drive i was told it was really nice. That was enough for me so i got it . I flew down to pick it up with the intention of driving back 4000km to Darwin . I had a few days to check it over and service it(change oils/filters), i had also ordered a GAP IID tool just in case but i'm still waiting for that to arrive.

I put about 900 blissful KM on the clock in the few days in NSW and then the ENGIN SYSTEM FAULT came up, i just managed to limp home (5km) with low power. Since that time i have ;

*Removed and cleaned the inlet manifold, EGR pipes and MAP sensors( a bit sooty but not too bad )
*Checked the top hoses for damage (no damage found)
*Checked all electrical connectors on the top of the motor
*Replaced the fuel filter
*Checked the fuel pump is working (flow at filter return line)

As it is now the motor just idles but with a lot of noise and smoke, i was able to move it a few hundred metres to where it is to stay for a while. the only thing i noticed was that the left side of the inlet manifold and left intercooler pipe seemed to be a bit oily .

So there you have it, i really appreciate all the input and advice from everyone. This forum is a great source of information !
Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated , i really hope it isn't something major but i won't know for a while yet and ill keep updating this thread through the process.
