Morning all,

I come to you cap in hand asking for any advice possible. I have a 2014 L405 SDV8 SV Autobiography. It's leaking oil drastically down the back of the engine. I can't find any diagrams or ways to see exactly the cause. It's never leaked oil before, and I had it serviced a couple of days prior to this issue starting. I am making an assumption that the two are connected. I could be completely wrong, but my thoughts are as follows: when the oil filter was replaced, the garage possibly over tightened the filter housing, causing the oil cooler attached below to possibly tweak and break it's seal?

I have some upcoming trips that are essential, and I would be very grateful for any help. I am not afraid to get my hands dirty and do any repair needed today given the timeframes, but I am lacking direction. I see the L322 suffers oil cooler issues so I am wandering if the L405 also suffers the same fate?

The 4.4 in at least the earlier L405 suffers the same oil leaks from the gaskets above and below the oil filter housing and the O-rings at the back of the oil filter housing as the 4.4 in the L322. I believe that the filter housing gets too hot due to being bolted to the top of the EGR cooler and as yet LR haven't revised the gaskets using a material that withstands the heat. O-rings are easy to upgrade by fitting Viton versions.

Be aware that dirt getting into the oil-ways below the filter housing can be fatal for the engine so unless very careful to ensure total cleanliness, probably better to get a workshop to do the job so that their insurance can cover the cost of a new engine if needed.

Plenty on here Charles, search Oil Leak 4.4 TDV8 or Oil Cooler 4.4 TDV8 or o-rings oil leak 4.4 TDV8.

Most of them are documented against the L322 4.4 TDV8. Yours is a 4.4 SDV8 but essentially the same engine.

Thank you for the reply. So I assume the assembly must all be the same then.. as far as I could see it looked visually different, in that the turbos are situated at the rear of the engine etc. It also looks more difficult due to the engine being set furthur back to the L322 and it appears to cover the rear access to remove the intake manifold. I will have a look atbthe threads, Thank you again

At first glance on the 322, there is limited access but simple (two nuts) removal of the large cabin air intake box opens up the access space. No idea if the 405 has a similar set up.

Perhaps somebody with a 405 will chip in here?

That said the o-rings are hard to get to, you need a mirror. But still a quick job.

Agree with Graeme, if it's the oil cooler you need to be very careful as far as contaminates go. Still do-able, many have done their own oil coolers.

Thanks again for the support with this. Yes I have warrenty, my issue is moreover the timing, I'm sometimes stationed overseas, and I have a few imminent trips coming up. My local Landrover dealer say they can't fit me in to even look at it until the second week of December I simply can't be without the car, to top matters off we live in the middle of know where on the country side and my better half is pregnant, so we're a little stranded. It's fantastic having these wonderful warrentys, but they are no good in the real world if you have to wait over a month for the dealer to even take a look at it for you. I am not 100% sure if I would trust an indi to do it correctly... but then, the dealers are not always to be trusted either

Absolutly yes thank you, at least I can visualise what's hiding under the plastic manifold

That explains having to remove the manifold to gain access then... I wander what my chances are of it being just an O ring on that pipe rather than the entire oil cooler..

Charles you should check for oil in your coolant tank.
You may have seen these if you've been reading up.
If there's no sign of oil in the coolant tank, then you are leaking out only and that's not so bad.
Not ideal but you're not doing any damage as long as you check your level daily and carry spare oil.
At least you can know how urgent this is, might help you decide whether to wait for the warranty window.
Don't forget to us the exact oil for these.

I have checked the tank and It's clean and no oil contamination thankfully. However I did use 2L of oil yesterday to do only 18 miles, and when I parked up smoke was bellowing out from the bonnet, I poped the bonnet quickly and found it was like someone was trying to smoke signal the neibouring town! I was more worried about it causing a fire.
I have 20L of Shel helix ultra I bought from land rover only a couple of days ago... I have about 10L left now. I've all but destroyed the drive way much to the dismay of she who must be obeyed

err yeah that 's a lot of oil coming out....

I would go back to square 1.

It wasn’t leaking before the service, so my money is on the way the oil filter has been replaced being the culprit.

Have they fitted the rubber ring seal correctly ?

Remove the oil filter, clean as much of the spillage up as possible and refit the oil filter with a new rubber seal if necessary.
