4.4 tdV8 DPF soot levels.

I am guilty of getting paranoid about my DPF soot levels, particularly the rate at which it is filling up.

I am hoping this thread will get other owners to give me some readings to compare with.

I have never had a DPF warning light, but am aware from Greg’s previous reports that the Amber will trigger if soot level reaches 23g.
This week....
19g reading at start of 60miles of motorway journey.
3.4g after 30miles at 60mph, when exhaust temp shot up to 620c, so obviously doing a regen.
14.8g after 100miles of motorway at 70+ish.

This seems an excessively quick fill up rate to me, given that it involved no town traffic ,short stop start journey work.

I eagerly await Greg’s report now he has changed the PO..40 .D etc sensor, because mine has been showing this fault code for the last 2 years, but because I have never had any DPF alarms I have just ignored it., but something has changed suddenly to increase my soot level fill up rate.

I have cleaned the plenum and hoses to watch out for any signs of soot leakage from the manifolds, but as yet not spotted any.

My only other idea of what to check next is the throttle, for dirt/ sticking ?

I should add that the car is running perfectly and if I boot it it pulls like a train with not a hint of exhaust smoke.

Ideas please, before I pay to get the sensor changed.

Hi Mike

How are you reading the soot levels - OBD tool or built in function?

Hi Mike, geez that's shot up again!

Since having my DPF removed and cleaned, mine has been kept in check by regular checking and regen runs before the yellow light comes on. But it does climb up quickly. I am doing regens on average every three weeks. But I don't normally drive on any 50mph roads, most/all of my driving is around central London. 30mph is rare.

I'm now away for around a week so I won't really know for a bit whether the new manifold sensor is going to make a difference. My soot was on 18g when I changed the sensor last week so I expect I'll do a kind of 'reset' regen run when I get back.

And then I will have to carry on using the car as normal and monitor the number of weeks it takes to get back up over 17g.
And then I'd like to monitor the averages a bit over next few months.

So getting a conclusive read on whether changing the sensor has made a difference on mine won't be quick.

I'll be posting up a step-by-step guide in the next few days, perhaps change your sensor if you're up for it?

What's interesting is that you have had the Turbo Drain done whilst I haven't.

There could be another cause with yours to make such a sudden difference, especially since yours has been previously so well behaved.

We never did get an answer from Pat @GAP on the inactive value of DPF remaining volume. That could be another way to monitor. I am wondering how reliable the DPF sensors are - the sensors that give the XXgrams reading. I am still not sure how it comes to that value. I have a suspicion that the grams are a kind of aggregated value. I might read over the WM again.

The other weird thing with your is that the run(s) you did before your holiday did not trigger a regeneration. You gave it a good go too I remember.

Could you think back and list out all the parameters conditions vs the run you did which did trigger the region.

I would like to try to help work out why it didn't trigger a regen. Fuel level must be over 25% for example.

Let us know?

Regards, Greg Cheers, Greg

Ade,
Bluetooth iid onto iPad mini via GAP app.
I have trained my co-driver wife to take screen grabs as the readings change. Thumbs Up

The middle screen grab shows a regen in-progress; 615 degrees.
That's rocket hot huh?

Greg,
Before my holiday , and this is when I noticed the sudden change.....
Approx 9.0g at start of 60miles motorway trip to Crewe (M6) so limited to 50mph due to roadworks, but the weather was foul,
torrential rain, which further added to stop start journey.
12.5g on arrival.
Then clear run home, albeit limited to 50mph, 15.8 g., so starting to get higher than I have ever seen before.

After a couple of days town work, stop start short journeys, up to 19g.
Then I started running up and down the M62 trying to get it to regen. ,but obviously didn’t go far enough.

PS
My tank is always over half full.

Greg,
The temp peaked at 620c and the soot level bottomed out at 3.4g.

All at exactly 60mph on M61. (tank full of fuel).

What were these M62 runs Mike?
Speeds, distance, traffic, conditions? How many times?

Greg,
I am certain that I didn’t go far enough at a constant 50+mph because of the traffic and I decided to go and visit my local indi garage, which was when we talked about how they struggle getting the sensor out and how they find it easier to break off the lead and use a proper deep socket , just as you did.

I was surprised how far I had to go this week before the regen process triggered, it was over 30miles at a constant 60mph,
but I was very relieved when I saw the temp shoot up, followed by the fairly rapid drop in soot level.
It peaked at 620c and the lowest soot level reading was 3.4.

Hi Mike, any chance you could estimate those distances?
The M62 run and back to your Indy.
And the run you did before the regen happened?

There are parameters I don't understand (yet), for example I read there is a frequency limit of some sort.
My guess is that it stops tself doing regens too often. Or if it failed it may record failed attempts. Or some other conditions.

Not sure how that would have affected yours though. Still learning'

. Cheers, Greg

Greg,
I was doing 60 mph constant for 20 minutes, so 20 miles, then extra 6 or 7 miles to indi garage.
I am dismissing these efforts to trigger an active regeneration, simply on the basis of I didn’t go far enough.

I have printed out the workshop Manual PDF detailing the System Operation and read it over and over to be certain how it all works.

Interestingly, it says “Active regeneration generally occurs every 250 miles.....

My soot level went from 3.4g to 14.8g in exactly 100 miles.
ie. 11.4g/ 100 miles of motorway driving.

I am carefully monitoring it this week whilst I am doing only short local trips , but am definitely suffering from DPF paranoia.

I have got another motorway trip next week, 62 miles each way, so will get some more “screen shots” to see if I trigger my next Active regen, or if it starts to fall doing any passive regens, which trigger at 250c.

PS,
I have nagged PAT at GAP again by email about the Zero DPF remaining volume readings.
I will forward you any response.

20 miles / 20 mins should be ok, certainly from my experience. And reading your earlier notes your soot was at 19g. And you said fuel was ok - so I just can't understand why it didn't regen that time.

Do you think it's a possibility it started at say 15miles into that run and you came off before it completed?

I think I had that once it didn't complete but it came down to 15 (below the 17 threshold) and therefore didn't recommence.
Because as you know a fully completed regen should see you 5g or even below when completed fully.

The 250 mile frequency sounds like the thing I vaguely remembered. That might have affected things too.

Yes you're right you may get a passive regen which are smaller events at lower temps - I've seen these happen too and they can drop you grams a few notches. I don't fully understand the parameters for these yet.
. Cheers, Greg

Thanks Mike

I'm fairly sure it's bang up to date though!

Only had it 3 months and updated it as soon as I got it!!
