Fitting new rearview camera (non LR camera)

Reverse cameras can be easily found in any car accessory shop. Prices range from 20 GBP to 200 GBP, depending on quality. I went for the most expensive one as not only was it HALF the price of an original LR reverse cam, it also has wide angle lenses, 2 year warranty & infra red vision. (for low light)

Installation took an hour as the shop had never worked on a FFRR before. From my observation, it was a relatively easy job. I wanted the new cam to be located in its original place under the rear top spoiler. Easier way would have been to stick the cam onto the number plate but then the car will look funny with 2 rear cams!!

I am happy with results. if I were to do it again, i would choose the cheaper camera option as the resolution on the in-car touch screen (06MY) is cr*p therefore not doing justice to a good quality camera!

Good job Mercury Thumbs Up

What is the picture like at night with the IR? Is it worth doing just for that?

Not necessary as when reverse is selected, the reverse lights are bright enough already. '01 1.8i Freelander. Grey/ grey

Hi Mercury,

Did the new Camera fit straight into the housing for the old one or did you have to do sme modification? What about the wiring and other connections - straight swop or some soldering etc required?

Any chance you can put up a link to the camera that you got?

Thanks! African Bush Junkie ... in London!

Although I didn't carry out the mod myself, I was watching the mechanic who fitted it. Some cutting of the original housing was required to get the new cam to fit. He very quickly attached the wires (no soldering) next. Looked simple anyway!

Don't have a link as I bought the camera from a shop locally I'm afraid. '01 1.8i Freelander. Grey/ grey
