Preventative maintenance for turbos

Hi,having owned my Tdv8 3.6 for 3 months and being still in the honeymoon phase.. Whistle . I worry about the turbos crapping themselves , the car has 127,000 mls on. I’ve recently done ALL oils aside from the auto gearbox..and intend to drop the engine oil with new filter every 6 months or 5000 mls whichever comes first.
Aside from giving the engine a min or so to idle from cold to warm before setting off and the same to cool after a journey,is there anything else of a practical nature, aside from praying, I can employ to mollycoddle me turbos? Rolling Eyes eg;oil additives or visual inspections/ checks for warning signs of impending doom?.. despite em being better hidden than the wife’s purse! Smile
Are they a common failure or not if you keep to a sensible maintenance regime.?Many thanks in advance for your invaluable words of wisdom. 2008 L322 Vogue 3.6 TDV8 in Java Black with parchment and Navy interior. 125000mls.

I used to be indecisive and have a split personality... but we are ok now...I think?

Use the best synthetic oil and filter available, change the oil and filter when it appears to deteriorate, not by mileage. Use a EGR System cleaner like Revive every 80,000km I now also use a de-carboniser additive in our diesel fuels, wife has a TDI Skoda VSR. Different driver styles and trip types have a big influence on the engine oils.Short trips will have a big effect on oil life, especially if full operating temperatures are not reached.
One thing I have noticed reading this forum is the quality of fuel in the UK seems to be varied? This also could be a factor. Here in Oz there is a national fuel quality standard; apart from brand type additives the only major variance is Alpine Diesel in the South for the Winter months.

Good advice Laurie, but will this have any impact , that is the EGR cleaner, if it has not been used so far on a 100K + motor? If the EGR's are likely to already be quite carbonised, will a cleaner cause more harm than good ? .

Thanks Laurie. I should have mentioned both egr valves were replaced with new ( I have the garage receipt , Land Rover Indy specialist )some 4 months before I bought it, so I’m hoping the turbos were ok before the old valves went west! I also have a stamped up service book, which appears to show a full service history. These cars get me,we drive em with clenched buttocks, bated breath in a cold sweat Rolling with laughter ...awaiting the...next thing! ££££... Personally I believe that it could only benefit the engine if done correctly and the other minor maintenance carried out eg lubricate actuators etc. Below are comments I posted on the AURLO site in regards to the turbo's.

Personally I believe the EGR system is the main culprit. The soot and crap that is returned to the intake eventually goes through and gets caught in the turbos. When you switch off the engine this residual crap vaporises and sticks around the turbo shaft eventually restricting oil flow to the bearings. The airline industry regularly cleans/washes their turbines to stop these deposits from becoming a problem. A small deposit on a blade can cause a vibration due to the extremely high speed of the blades and if left unchecked can cause significant damage to bearings etc.

TdV8 catastrophic turbo failure ! [/img]

Notice the carbon deposits on the end of the turbine blades due to centrifugal force in the compressor housing. The heavier oily deposits flung to the ends of the blades and also onto the inner housing. If these deposits continue to grow the oil becomes contaminated and acts as an abrasive inside the turbo damaging bearings etc This starts vibrations at the shaft area that ultimately get bigger and the distance between the blade tips and the housing shrinks till ultimately they touch and then the results are as below. This is why only the highest grade synthetic oils are recommended for turbos so as to reduce carbon build up. The cleaner the air going into the turbo the longer the oil and hence the turbo will last. This is the reason EGR mods and oil catch cans are becoming increasingly popular with diesel owners. How you would set them up on a twin-turbo Ffrr is another question ?

I would like to hear of other's comments.

Great informative video! Thanks! Has anybody fitted a bypass filter yet? What does it involve, degree of difficulty and cost etc?Where did you obtain it and what make also? Thank you .. Thumbs Up 2008 L322 Vogue 3.6 TDV8 in Java Black with parchment and Navy interior. 125000mls.

I am coming to the conclusion that, given we have +100K mileage cars, the best thing to do is:

Strip down to the EGRs, clean and inspect operation of EGRs (How to test off car ?) and check all hoses to and from (Edfors howto for this)

Decide on replacement(cost @ £700 if you include all the gaskets and hoses)

Rebuild

Check all intercooler hoses and intercooler

Check/test turbos ??? How ?? (Seems that the turbos let go because of the EGRs...)

Adopt a regime of diesel treatment, regular EGR cleaning, regular oil changes with premium oil and filter (5K miles), (possibly top grade diesel fuel usage too)

Anything else..... .

I also use revive. I think it help the intake system. It might help remove those deposits on turbo fan blades and reduce the risk of an imbalanced CHRA. Induction cleaner leaves the hot turbo pretty much as steam and flows through the intercooler intake pipes and manifold, inside the head and combustion chamber, through the exhaust side of the turbo, a small amount through the EGRs but most out the exhaust. Taking soot and grime out of the engine.

Similarly disabling the EGRs helps ensure cleaner combustion process inside the engine. Which probably results in less contaminants suspended in the oil. Oz delivered 3.6 FFRRs don’t have a DPF. So disabling the EGR is simpler here.

I personally think JLRs decision to change from 11,000km oil changes on early 3.6s to 24,000km oil changes on the facelift 3.6 was a mistake. The oil gets very dirty even after 10,000km. I think extending oil changes means more contaminants could possibly be affecting turbo oil flow, turbo seals and bearings. So engine oil flush and 10,000km intervals helps I think.

My 3.6 has equivalent of about 175,000km. I am a bit nervous about turbo failure. But have done all I can to reduce the risk I think.

The only other think I could do is preemptively replace the turbos to avoid catestrophic engine failure. But my mechanic has pretty much talked me out of it saying the oil flush and 10,000km oil changes for my cars entire life should mean the turbos will last as long as the motor. ______________________________
