Hi,

I currently have a 2006 VW Touareg v6 TDi, Ive had it for 5 years and taken the mileage from 120,000 to 180,000 with no problems at all, it looks and drives like new, no rust etc. I do feel however ready for a change.

I had a Range Rover classic many moons ago, 4.2 LSE, I converted it to LPG, it was OK.

I'm now looking to find another Range Rover and I would appreciate your comments / opinions.

I tow a caravan weighing at 2 Tonnes

I do around 12,000 miles per year, 10% of it towing

I'm told the gearboxes on the V6 Rangie arent so good, the TDV8 is much better?

I dont want a sport, I want the cathedral sized full monty

With the VeeDub I had VCDS software for full diagnostics, whats available for the Rangie?

I have a budget of around £10k

I'm not afraid of high mileage and would prefer a newer high miler to an older low mileage.

I've seen a few for sale with rust which is disappointing in this day and age.


Any help or advice gratefully received.

A maintenance budget of £10k should be adequate, how much are you thinking of spending to get the car.
Sorry for the cheeky answer but be aware these ars can eat finances. letters not necessarily in the right order

Well thanks guys for the advice, I was kind of hoping Range Rovers wernt that bad but it seems my hopes are dashed, I'll look round for another Touareg or Q7.

Upping my budget would surely just get me a newer unreliable car that can eat into my wallet?

My 2006 Touareg I bough for £7500, 5 years ago. Apart from service items it's cost me nothing, it has no rust (galvanised), no oil leaks, runs as sweet as a nut. I had heard rumours of reliability issues with Rangies but I really fancied one. From reading the advice here, the rumours seem to be true, major reliablity issues with a car circa 8 years old. I'll take the safe option and stick with the seemingly superior German Engineering.

German engineering....my last vehicle was a 2012 BMW X5 bought as Approved Used from a BMW dealer - 6 months into owning it, it had the following issues:

1. All brake pads and discs replaced due to an ongoing squealing noise (took four visits to the dealer to have resolved)
2. EGR valve failed, had to be recovered to dealer - took five days to resolve
3. Failed led rear light - complete unit had to be replaced
4. Water ingress in rear compartment, dealer couldn’t replicate the fault so never resolved
5. All alloy wheels corroded - dealer would not rectify
6. Side of driver seat ‘leather’ badly cracked - after a battle with BMW they finally agreed to replace driver seat base cover - I had to pay £120, they contributed £1200!!!

Thankfully all the above was covered under warranty! The X5 was off the road for around 11 days while all the above was sorted out.

From a driving point of view I found the X5 a disappointment - give me a FFRR anytime!

Your budget places you in L322 Supercharged and TDV8 territory.

You're right in that a well-maintained high mileage example is worth considering. Your statement about a newer low mileage example being unreliable isn't accurate.

As a first step, find an example that you're interested in and see what you think. Do your choosing carefully.

I've got a high mileage TDV8 (151,000) runs sweet as a nut. Dare I say it, the most reliable car I've ever owned, and I've owned shed loads of differing makes.

Serviced regularly. Change of diff oil. Had a drop link, battery, top hose were the other expenses.

Buy one, you may be surprised.

I'm on my 2nd full fat,a 4.2 supercharged,In the 13 months I've had her,she's honestly been the most reliable car I've had (70+ cars)((touches wood)).

I also run Tvr's,which tend to be tarnished (unfairly) with the same brush re reliability.

It's only people with little or no mechanical skill or understanding that are scared of them.

I spent 11k on an 07 TDV8 97k mile example with full LR dealer history, with the aim of doing circa 20k miles a year. In the past 8 months since taking ownership I've covered 16'000 miles. I've had no gearbox, engine, battery, ecu or suspension issues at all and despite a few silly niggles, it's been completely joyous.

Yes, it's more expensive to run & maintain than a Touareg and they will all have a few niggles here and there that are well documented, but if you find a good one, it shouldn't be too ruinous at all.
