I ordered mine direct from DVLA. It's not the best plate but could not afford a "real" private one.

I ordered on line last Wednesday and the paperwork came through Friday morning although they do say allow 10 - 14 days.

You only need your V5 (log book), and the form V750 from the DVLA to change it all over. Mrs took my insurance doc just in case but this and the MOT is all on line for them now so they can check anyway. The form (V750) suggests you take the MOT and Tax disc if it was done in the last week or so.

Local office give you an "Entitlement to use" doc so you can go straight and get the plates made up. I just have to wait for a new V5 to come through the post in a couple of weeks.

They stamped everything and gave it back to her.. 10 minutes in total. Sime as that.! Ash

my nearest dvla office will be bristol or oxford so i was worried about taking the tax disc out of the car to do the change over..glad to know that they can get the tax disc info digitally...when you get and put the new tax disc into the car ,do you destroy the old one or send it back .. ... - .- -.

From the top of page 2.

After you send off your stuff, a week or two later you get a new V5c with the new reg number shown, a new tax disc with the new reg number and you send the old tax disc back to them afterwards. You should also (I think) get a certificate allowing you to go and buy registration plates, although you can use the V5c to do that.

Thumbs Up

I bought two 'initials' plates last year (mine and the wifes) and have yet to get round to sorting the transfer over - having read this post I will be off to the local DVLA office very soon. Thanks all for the info.. "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

Interesting - The DVLA docs that came with the plate suggest you just destroy the old tax disk once you get the new one. I've not sent mine back.! Ash

Yes that's the latest DVLA procedure. In the past you had to return in brown envelope. Thumbs Up

I usually go to the local DVLA office as there's one in Newcastle, it saves any hassle and I know everything has
been done right.

I did forget once, to take the old tax disc back so they could destroy it, they said it wasn't a problem as they just tear it in half and throw it in the bin anyway, as long as I did the same when I got home, they were fine about it. 2006 Mercedes CLS

Scarey, I'd ring and check first mate. I've travelled in the past 70 mile round trip to be told they would post it back when its done. When it was a real local office I had no such trouble, in and out. 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS

Well just got the paperwork back for the transfer of the Wifes number, posted Monday morning , returned today , Thursday. As normal you get a certificate which authorises production of the plates (still need to take ID to the plate producer), New modified Tax discs, New modified MOT Certificate. The rest (modified V5's) will be along in a week or so.

This was a straight transfer at £80, incidentally its been £80 for over 20 years to!

Also conducted via Shrewsbury DVLO which may be a bit quieter than others in the city I guess
