Only thing I'd say is get a decent one.

If you get F17 SGC because your initials are SGC it looks like a £50 special which does not suit the car. Just makes it look much older or you are trying hide the year with a cheapo plate.
Better to get a non age plate or the right year. Or something that spells something. SGC 17, or if the car is an 04 reg, SC04 SGC = Thumbs Up

Just my opinion.
Never seen why people spend a fortune on cars that lose value and then go cheap on a private reg they can keep for the rest of their lives.

I have three. One for each of my cars and one for my wife's.

None cost me more than £300. None are my initials. All mean something to me. None are mis-spaced or require numbers to be read as letters. All are Letter Number space Letter Letter Letter (eg M4 ABC).

* One I had to buy for reasons I wouldn't divulge on a public forum but it was the only solution I could see to a particular conundrum.
* One was on a car when I bought it and the dealer didn't want to pay me the extra delta when I sold it, so I kept the plate.
* One was a present for the wife - as I had a personalised plate I thought I'd better get her one.

Upsides:
* I think they make the car look neater than an "AB60 XYZ" type plate
* Don't shout "I've got the latest car"
* Can remember my reg numbers

Downsides:
* Fiddle to change cars
* Look a bit "arriviste"
* People recognise you more easily - you'd better not be seen driving around with your mistress

Driving around with my mistress? Well she was... er... umm... I guess you mean the plates.

Sometimes it annoys me. Only really when I am selling the car. It annoys me to pay the transfer/retention fees to the DVLA. It slows down the process (I'm thinking of selling the Rangie now and I'll have to mess around sending forms, making new plates, etc.). Sometimes dealers are able to do it for you but it's still an extra hassle.

I do know a very good shot who had a plate that ended in GUN on his Rangie. He took it off as he was worried that antis would target the car (or thieves looking for weapons).

A mate has CO02 BAD on a supercar. Another has a set of WMD plates on various fast/polluting vehicles.

I think a straight transfer (i.e. you own both cars) is £80. Otherwise you pay £105.

I like that Seepee, very good. Thumbs Up

Scarey, it's actually quite easy.

If you get a plate from someone already on retention they'll have paid £80 retention plus the £25 assignment fee up front. This is where the £105 comes from. All you'll have to do is get the name on your V5c put on the retention document as the Nominee. This will cost you £25 on top to add your name.
Plus however much you pay for the plate of course.

Are you buying from the DVLA or a plate dealer?
If so they should do it all for you.

If not, are you buying the donor vehicle?

My answer was that that if you retain a plate for £105 there is no further payment when you put the plate on the car . So in Seepees case (the situation I was referring to in this thread) he will buy the car and put the plate on at no cost Thumbs Up

Buying a plate already on retention is a different matter as Fox points out.
