Brake Pipes

Have you checked your brake pipes recently ? My 2008 Vogue TDV8 3.6 developed a serious brake fluid leak last week and in 60 years motoring I cannot actually recall a metal brake pipe corroding through. OSO First sign was increased brake pedal travel and within hours the fluid level warning lamp lit up. Topped level up and in even shorter time lamp relit and a quick look underneath indicated a leak in the OS rear pipe (not hose) next to caliper,
Apparently a well known corrosion area because all manner of dirt etc accumulates between pipe and where it straps to rear suspension - this 'fault' dates back to BMW L322s and X5s.
Changed both sides and all is well although some spanner monkey had tried to remove one side unsuccessfully with resultant mash up of connectors !
Maybe worth a check when next you are having a gander underneath ?

Corroding brake pipes is quite a common problem.

I've seen 07/08 cars that need the pipes replacing, and the earlier ones are probably all getting close to that point now. Front pipes usually only corrode on the exposed loop by the brake flexi pipe - and this can be managed by spraying with some protection regularly. Rears can go anywhere from the lengths along the sill and up over the rear cross member. MOT's don't always see the corrosion if it's covered, hence the soft pedal.

Replacing the 2 rear pipes is not a huge job. There are existing connections behind the near side front wheel liner. The sill cover comes off (not always easy, but give the 4 plastic bolts a spray with penetrating oil and they do come undone). The fuel tank cover needs to come off (about 8 bolts, and 2 hard to reach nuts up near the propshaft - easy with a long extension bar), then feed the new pipe from the near side rear wheel up over the rear cross member and forwards to the front connector, before finishing the bending to fit.

The job is about 3.5 hours if you've done it before. Current:

Well, there's a thing. I was just coming on here to look this up - mine has just developed a leak in a brake pipe as well. I topped it up last night, checked this morning and the level was still okay - but when I look underneath I can see it dripping out.

I somehow suspect it'll be sitting on the drive until I can get an appointment with Rovertune now! I was going to put it in for a service in a couple of weeks anyway. So no time like the present!

Does anybody know whether brake pipes are covered by the warranty?

Oh - and when I turn the car round so it's facing down the drive instead of up, I get a low coolant warning. I topped that up a few weeks ago, so that be might leaking as well. Are there any known areas in the coolant hoses I should be looking at?
