SatNav DVD Drive destroys disc!

Big Cry

Chaps,

Was driving to work this morning and the satnav in my MY06 FFRR (with the touch screen satnav) started to say "Nav disk read error" (or similar - I don't recall the exact words). A bit of button prodding and the moving map continued as normal. Then after about 10 minutes the display alternated between the "sat nav read error" and the normal moving map display all the way to work. I took the DVD out and was amazed to see the disk with concentric rings etched in and many scratches on the disk - it's as if the DVD drive has destroyed the disc!! I cleaned the disc as best I could, re-inserted it and then the satnav showed nothing at all, just the "error reading disk" screen.

Particularly annoying as I bought the disc from NavTeq last year in March for £149 (rather than going down the illegal/piracy route for free!).

When I got home I replaced the 09/10 disc with the original 06 disc and the sat nav appears to now be working. My worry is that over time the unit may trash this original disc too....plus of course ideally I'd like updated maps so will look to buy a new NavTeq DVD once the 2011 maps are released....but don't want to shell out another £149 if the disc will only last 8 months in the drive.

Any ideas or thoughts on what might have damaged the 09/10 disc and what do you think the chances are of it happenning again? I'm told by my local indy that the head units are v expensive to replace (circa £900) and that no cheaper OEM options are available, is this correct??

Thanks all,

- GL

first of all make a copy of the original 2006 disc, then use that disc in the dvd drive..this means you have the original safe from damage...i dont know why the new disc got damaged unless the dvd drive is on its way out or maybe a large pothole vibrated something inside the drive...

Hi Scarey,

Yes good tip - I've never had much joy with making DVD's so just tried to take your advice and make a copy but ran out of space on my 4.7Gb destination DVD-R. It looks like the NavTeq disc holds around 8Gb of data, so to make a copy of that will I need to use a DVD R/RW, DVD DL or DVD-RAM do you know?? ....or in other words, assuming a blank 8Gb DVD is available (I've yet to check) what type of disc will the RR drive read?

Thanks again for the tip - good one,

- GL

you need a dual layer / double layer dvd disc and a laptop/pc capable of writing the same...i know from your post that you dont like illegal copies but if you get stuck and as you have the original disc, i can do a 2009/10 ''backup'' copy for you for a small charge..

BTW, that would be the MK III vs the MK One-hundred-eleven? Laughing
