Front suspension noise.

I know too many odds; my front suspension makes noise on bumpy surface.
But i realised it does not when i go up hill even it is bumpy(same hill noise downward; none upward)
It is a knocking noise as suspension works.
Goes fine straight line corners etc.
May be this can shorten the list?? 2010 3.6tdv8 180k km.

Mine makes a repetitive knocking from the offside front shock area and has done for the last 30,000 miles. Nothing visually wrong and goes through a service and MOT without issues.

Have you got a video of it at all?

Thanks Alex

My personal experience is that the ball joints wear out, and when they do, they clunk when the wheels hit bumps. It doesn't affect the steering though ... just makes a clunking noise.

Solution: Replace both the suspension arms(which come with bushes) and the ball joints on each side. Its a medium difficulty task depending on how much rust there is. there are also how-to instructions on this site and other sites. V8 or else ...

Usual culprit to check is the front ARB drop links. Easy to replace.

Drop links are the usual suspect but they are good on mine. It has rattle from the o/s/f wheel whenever it hits any sort of bump, can even feel it with cats eyes.

I have tried ad infinitum to ID it, had it up on ramps, wheel free, leveraged all the ball joints and no play evident anywhere.

Only thing I can think is if the shock has a top bearing that it sits in under the shock tower - that is a typical area for this sort of sounds on normal cars but haven't looked in Rave yet to see if the FFRR has one.

Cheers,

You can hear at 8th and 20th seconds.
It became more like metallic clunk espesially on breaking.
No noise uphill. 2010 3.6tdv8 180k km.

If thats a gravel type road with lots of little bumps on it, then ball joints imho based on those sounds.

I've tried that too. Couldn't find anything at all. Took the arms and ball joints off, and when in hand the ball joint had about 2mm vertical play in it. The suspension seems to be pre-loaded with force that makes it hard to use a lever to find play. Similarly, when jacked up with the wheel hanging, the arms are at such an angle that they prevent play appearing in the ball joint. V8 or else ...

Yup, mine makes a louder version of that noise. Has done for the last 30,000 miles and nothing has fallen off.

Be interested if you find the cause and the cure!

Two different mechanics said this noise is due to steering box.
And need to be repaired.
I have no idea about this job,any comments? 2010 3.6tdv8 180k km.
