The two main areas you need to look at are the area you have described and also the rear arches where the back doors shut over them.

The common areas are the rear tailgate and the rear arches. Have a search on the forum there are loads of posts about this problem. The other area would be under the plastic sills where water seems to trap with the muck but you will to remove these to have a look but its pretty easy.

We are so lucky here in Australia that they don't salt the roads in winter, ( no snow) so hence little rust |

I'm temped to take off the lower trip to give it a clean and a coat of tectal/fish oil or lanolin to insulate that area from my occasional beach driving. ______________________________
