Parcel Shelf - Broken Peg Repair

Was heavy handed with the parcel shelf the other day and snapped off one of the guide pegs. It's one of the end pegs nearest the tailgate end so the peg takes any load on the shelf.

Viewed from the underside of the shelf, here's the fella snapped off:

So I got a 4x50 screwfix screw and drove it into the shelf. There's a hole and some solid material so the screw seems to hold in there nicely. I used my DeWalt driver with a clutch setting of 6 so it would bite in enough but not more.

Then cut off the screwed with the Dremel, making a bit of a point while I was there.

Next I took the broken-off peg and ran a drill through the existing hole, 3.5mm drill or 4mm. If you use a 5mm drill you'll make to hole too big. Then you start to wind it on over the screw.

You get to the end and - it's on!

Although you can see the break there is a good bit of metal inside there now. Gave the whole shelf a shampoo and spot clean while it was out too. Refitted the shelf and the fix seems pretty good.

Yeah I was lucky to catch it as it snapped.

But once you have the screw in all you need is a bit of plastic the same diameter as the original (which yo can measure off the other side.

Then drill a hole through, screw it on and cut it to length.

. Cheers, Greg

I bought one from the dealer for minimum money a few years ago when one on my TD6 was iffy. Might be more money now...

Looks like a job well done.

What the pegs? Can't beat the satisfaction of a quick, easy 5p fix to anything! Anyway I'd rather pretend I saved myself hundreds for a new shelf! Cheers!

Also if you have one box of screws in your shed, the Screwfix 4x50 is the one to have. They're good for fixing all kinds.

Or 8g x 2" in old proper money..... Thumbs Up

I have more screws than I know what to do with, they tend to migrate home from site in my pockets and end up in the washing machine!

Yes the pegs (not the shelf) are available separately. Wink There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The pegs are available individually from the dealer, so it is sometimes easier just to replace the part than to fix it. I replaced a peg with a new one a few months ago and I seem to remember they were only a couple of pounds each. Current:

I didn't realise you could get replacements cheap... But I've got that extremely satisfied feeling of fixing something for the cost of a 5p screw. Only took 10 mins too.

. Cheers, Greg
