The Automatic Gear Selector on the P38 was a switch and prevented selecting reverse when travelling forward, as this was demonstrated to me on the Land Rover Experience .

My bad - I should have added that we were in the DeRanged Rover which has the ZF HP22 AutoBox as fitted on the classic and early P38s. Haven't tried that with the L322 but I suspect (Hope!) that it won't let me do that ... Is yours the gear lever or a rotary shifter? C African Bush Junkie ... in London! Because reverse gear is required to operate in ‘failsafe’ conditions e.g. even if the electrical supply to the transmission is lost so no solenoids can be activated, the valve block assembly features a manual valve on cable operated transmissions (like the 5HP24 & 6HP26/28 ) so that hydraulic pressure can be directed to the relevant clutches. This potentially gives a problem in the event of the driver inadvertently selecting reverse while travelling forwards at speed. As an example, on the 5HP24 the control system gets around this issue by using an additional solenoid (MV3) whose sole job in life is to actuate a reverse cut-off valve in the event of this happening, to intercept the hydraulic flow to the C & F clutches from the manual valve.
