Are we being fleeced?

The multi-function (12 button) seat switch was replaced recently as part of the ffs mot and while perusing the bill I noticed something strange. This item is available for anywhere between £100 - £150 on the bay and I had considered one, but as I was having a number of things addressed while it was in I decided to go with the quoted £220 for a new one from JLR. After a mix up (at the suppliers end) where I was made to wait over a week for a 'special order' item (that turned out to be a body control unit!) the correct item was supplied 'off the shelf' as they carry them in stock. To get back to the bill, I was charged £165 for the brand new switch unit and while labour charges need to be taken into account, I cant help feeling that some ebay sellers of certain second hand items could be accused of over estimating the value of a comparable item when obtained new. From now on I will be checking new prices of anything before considering risking buying second hand. QUID FACIUM TIBI

Interesting read. I experienced something similar last week. I needed a new dipstick guide tube O ring which was proving hard to find. Hence moved on to looking at the actual tube because the O ring was not sold separately. As you did I looked on that auction site and the tubes appeared to be around £25 - £33. Thanks to another member of this forum I approached my local LR Dealer and bought a new original part for £15. I to learnt a quick lesson.

By far the worst offenders are the specialist 4x4 breakers who range from stupidly expensive for secondhand parts to utter criminals. What the hell happened to the old fashioned scrapyard?

I remember a time when you could go to your local scrappy for a wiper motor and fill a bag with whatever bulbs, fuses, switches, badges, special nuts and bolts, wiring, connectors, wing mirrors, radios, cassette (or even 8 track) players and anything else you might need for a fiver. Mind you, that was back in the days when I ran a mk1 Capri and once bought a GT dash with, joy of joys, a rev-counter and 5 Rostyle steel wheels for a weeks wage - £25. QUID FACIUM TIBI

Many of the parts are special order only from the dealer and sold as bigger assemblies. Rolling Eyes OffRoadRover.com An American Western Range Rover Off Road Blog

A while back when it was in for a brake recal at my local main dealer(where id never been seen before),I was in need of a rear light ,i'd priced them from various places inc.dan, when i asked the partsman for his quote it was the cheapest of them all,so the moral is ask your main dealer or Dan

indeed, the dealers are usually happy to haggle a bit on part prices if you have a comparable quote to beat. Thumbs Up

or just ask Dan There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Had a similar scenario on an old 7 series BMW, it needed a replacement rubber shroud on part of the air con system as it had split, so due to the value of the car, checked the breakers first who wanted @£10 for an old part, but went to the Main dealer and bought a new one for £11 (incl VAT) as they apparently sell parts for older BMWs at a discounted rate as I guess they recognise they would not sell any of their older car stocks otherwise. Steve
