Whining noise question?

Don't know how to upload a video but the FF developed a whine that increased in pitch depending on revs. Quick search on here led me to believe possible alternator failure and upon driving back to the house the battery warning light briefly flicked on then off. A short while later an awful screech followed by engine cutting out - luckily very close to home but not quite close enough to coast all the way. Started again fine for the very short run onto driveway where it was quickly turned off sworn at and left.

Now is this likely alternator failure or something far sinister where by I need to burn it, cut my losses and buy a different brand of 4x4 which doesn't need weekly trips to see the mechanic. It's an 02 plate 4.4 V8 if that makes any difference. Yes it's old and does need regular maintenance but once a week is trying my patience

Thx

Good Evening

I found the worlds worst and slowest mobile mechanic to undertake the work who fitted a reconditioned alternator from eBay. He ordered the wrong part originally (non water cooled) then couldn't believe the price of a genuine part so found one on eBay for £140 - old one exchanged for reconditioned one. This was after a week of it being off road and me saying I need the car back on the road so get the readily available new part but no he did his own thing. Upshot was 2 weeks later car finally returned and touch wood been ok although the battery light occasions flickers on at idle, but the car starts and runs fine.
A month later I still haven't been asked to pay the bill for the part or labour Laughing

The car however is going into my local Land Rover specialist to have any further work done for the MOT as I'm not risking that idiot working on it again....or I upgrade to the tdv8 for sale on here Wink
