Oil leak from dipstick tube

Morning all, my 06 Supercharged has developed an oil leak at the bottom of the dipstick tube. This may have been caused by me pulling at the dipstick. Have any other owners experienced this issue? I am going to try pushing it down this evening and see if that helps.

From what I can see there is an 'o'ring on the dipstick tube to seal it, this could have failed due to old age.. so if your going to get your hands dirty then an 'o'ring set might be a good idea... also there must be a crankcase breather somewhere, could possibly be blocked and need changing... normally a TD6 issue, but I suppose that it could apply to other LR engines!! Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Hi guys, thank you for the quick replies. My first thoughts were that the O ring/s had failed. I'll have to source correct part. Can someone confirm if the dipstick tube will simply pull out once unsecured? I have purchased Rave CDs but still await their arrival.

I am a long term Range Rover enthusiast/owner having had 2 classics, 2 P38s and now the L322 Supercharged. Normally Rave or a search of the forum Provide the answers, however this particular scenario did not return an answer.

I noticed that this issue has been reported by other LR owners so I'm not alone.

It looks to be only held by one bolt/ nut, then it should wriggle free, although I don't think you'll have any difficulties there!! Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Well guys I've just been out to the Rover and had a look at the basket holding the dipstick tube to the block. what I have done is slacken of the nut and pushed the tube down. A quick look underneath and the gap between the tube and the block has obviously gone. After it has been driven I check for a leak and confirm if this has been a success.

Hello all, well after loosening the dipstick tube retaining nut and pushing the dipstick tube down fully there was still a leak. I have just removed the dipstick tube and the O ring is still intact, however it does appear to have lost it's shape e.g. flat sides. I have been looking all over web but still cannot find a part number or anyone selling the O ring. I do have a big box of O rings of various sizes but non are a match. Could this be dealer only part?

I'll keep trawling the web for now.

If you can measure the OD of the groove where the o ring sits and the ID of the hole it pushes into then there are reference charts on the net as to which size it will be.

Personally I would try and get a viton ring, there are loads for sale on eBay. The image above is the microcat image which shows the available parts and the ring isn't a separate item. So unless you want to replace the whole tube (which will come with the o ring and is about £15) then you are going to be aftermarket/standard rings. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hello all,

Well I have to say that these O Rings are difficult to find. Hence thanks to those who suggested just buying the actual dipstick. A new dipstick tube was bought from the dealer today for the small cost of £15.00.
