I'm currently running my 2006 FF on the standard 19" with 255/55 19 tyres but I'm thinking of changing to an 18" wheel.

Although I like the current wheels the tyres are going to need replacing in the not very distant future and I'd like to swap them while they're still road legal so I can refit them should I decide to change my RR in the future.

I should have said, changing from my current 255/55/19's to the 285/55/18's will only result in a 1% increase in diameter which I don't think should be an issue, I'm also really like the Ventus tyres when I had them fitted to the Navara, but that's not to say they'll perform as well in the RR, but I do like the wider tyre look.

For interest, the earlier RRs had 18 inch wheels as standard. Mine is early MY2005 with 18s. John

I've seen a few sets of 18" for the FFRR's but liked the look of these, plus the asking price isn't bad at €200, about £175 (sorry, the link wasn't working, fixed now).

Any issues with putting the 285 tyres on these rims do you think?

Check the loading on the tyres are upto what LR specify for the 18". Iirc the load is 112 but could be wrong. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

With a td6 you will have a range of LRrims to choose from for a 285 tyre. Just make the offset is ok, load capacity is at least 900kg (especially if at normal speed on 2nd class roads), is 8" wide and is genuine LR rim. There are other good brands such as componotive. Just keeping it simple.

You should note a 285 tyre will not fit in the wheel well. I would carefully and physically check the diameter difference if intending to keep an original as a spare.

285/55/18 is not a very common size here so may not be easy finding one if one gets destroyed. I went to 265/60/18 as very common and fits in the wheel well.

Why don't you fit 255/60/18's that is the correct tyre size for 18"wheels and there is no clearance issues  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Good point, I think the tyres I have are 113V, rated at 1150kg so should be ok, it's currently fitted with 111v.

@ rav110, thanks for the info., but are you saying that a 285 tyre won't fit in the wheel well? I'm getting different information on this, perhaps depends on the offset of the new rims, I guess fitting is the only real way of knowing.

According to the comparison calculator the between 255/50/19 and 285/55/18 would be +1% in diameter and circum., +12% in width and +12.7% in sidewall.

@ Miggit, I'm only considering 285/55/18's because I already have a set sitting at home (and I like the wider look tyres..... ).

I tried a 285/60/18 in my L322 wheel well and it was too big. Even a 275 will be too big.

I've heard of people deflating tyres to fit a required space, or raising the cargo area floor. ______________________________

I've seen lots of posts about people running 285's, even up to 22", although with a lower profile tyre.

The difference between a 255/50/19 and 285/55/18 would only be +1% in diameter and circum., but a 12% increase in width.

Stan had 295/45/20's on RRS rims fitted to his TD6 FFRR, that's 3.6% wider and .7% taller that the tyres I'm proposing to fit.

I have read that the offset would need to be 53mm or lower to clear the front struts and from a search I think the wheels I'm looking at have an offset of 53mm.

increase in width will be 30mm so thats 15mm each side. if you have less than 15mm clearance between the inner sidewall and any components then it will foul, thats about a fingers width. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Surprised there's so much doubt about this. 285 isn't all that big. I've had 275 20s on two of my 322s and never had any issues with clearance (or anything else). Indeed I believe it was a "standard" oversize (Stormer alloys?) supplied by LR and was for sale in a main dealer near me for <£800 incl tyres.....at a time when I needed new tyres - so a no brainer for me at the time (on my '02). I think the car looked good on them, but obviously they didn't work as well for anything other than tarmac driving. I also had 275 Grabbers on my 4.2 SC an they worked well for me on and off road - although I see that Chris was keen to change them as soon as he could after he bought it! Mike - MPx

Thanks again guys, I think it's the offset of the wheels I'm looking at that could make the difference, there isn't a whole pile of room between the current wheel and the front strut but if the wheels I'm looking at have a different offset (in the right direction) then hopefully there won't be a problem.

I'm going to look at them in the morning, and hopefully get one of my own tyres fitted so will know a bit more then.
