When did door mirrors become wing mirrors?

How many others can remember (like me) when wing mirrors were actually fitted to the WINGS - all you young uns should watch old sweeny or the professionals episodes where they are driving jags, cortina's capri's even transits with wing mirrors in their correct place - on the wing! I cant understand why DOOR mirrors fitted to the DOORS are now generally referred to as wing mirrors..... QUID FACIUM TIBI

I know what you mean however many were fitted to doors to, I know for example our 1973 stag had mirrors on the doors as were the mirrors on our 84 classic and 78 911.

My mate has a 67 911 which has door mirrors.

But yes there were cars which had them on the wing. I think it's apps to do with making it easier to see in them, the closer to you face the better! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

They are starting to be called that here even though early cars didn't have them on the "wings" - a term not used here. They were on the front mudguards (our term for wings). Generally, though, we say door mirrors.

But then, I see people here now using the US term "fender" instead of "mudguard", and "hood" instead of "bonnet". Ron B. VK2OTC

Older cars did used to have door mirrors - a lot of the time small aftermarket ones that fitted onto the front quarterlight (remember those as well) pillar and sometimes wing mirrors as well. But to reiterate, wing mirrors go on wings (or mudguards, or fenders) and the mirrors fitted to doors are DOOR MIRRORS! Unless you have a Delorian or something else fitted with gull-wing doors, then it gets confusing.
If this keeps up we will start calling the thing that goes on your arm just behind your hand and tells the time an anklewatch... QUID FACIUM TIBI

My early classics had them on the bonnet so they should have been called bonnet mirrors.

Just to continue on this theme, I recall Government pool cars (used to cart Govt Ministers from place to place) always had after market chrome wing mirrors fitted, even when the car itself came with door mirrors. It was especially noticeable on Rover SD1s in the early 1980s.

My first car was a Viva HC, with wing mirrors. Second was a Mini Clubman Estate, with just a drivers door mirror.
