Should I wait until the engine temp gauge has reached full operational temperature, or is it ok to thrash it from the off, or once the temp gauge has moved off the stop?

Well who waits for the engine to warm up before flooring it if it's hot?

It takes more than 50 miles to properly warm up an engine and get even temperatures throughout, and that's an average size car engine......

So waiting until it is warm would be a labour of love....

I'd give it a good few miles though to warm the oil up....  Pete

Despite the fact that I never thrash mine, I asbsolutely wait until the engine is up to temp until thinking about getting spirited with my right foot.

Preheat helps an awful lot with this quandary
Personally you'd need to wait till operating temp then a few more minutes so it cycles through the gearbox cooler as well to make sure that's upto temp. With a tdv8 the worst issue will be bore wash and turbos not being up to temp and fouling from the woot caused at full fuel loading.


Added to that, diesels need a good thrash when hot to help clear them out from any short runs or you get eve and dpf issues from the excess spot thensysgem cant handle long term.

Back in the day I had an alfasud sprint which had a red warning light on the dash which went after when engine was upto temp. Shame it didn't warn about the rust and snapping timing belts !!!! 2015 4.4 AB
