I see the powers that be are going to up the penalty for using a mobile whilst driving.
What a good thing that will be BUT who's going to police it ?
Last time I looked around our way(Nottinghamsire) we don't have a traffic department anymore

I drove all the way to Edinburgh from my house and back t'other week and never saw a single traffic cop.

it is a good thing and TBH i was one of the culprits. but now i have BT in all the cars there is no excuse, and i can read texts when they flash up on my watch, which i suppose is classed as dangerous too but as they struggle to police the phones, then policing who is looking at a smart watch for a text/to tell the time may prove a step too far.

at the end of the day emailing and texting when driving is just plain dangerous, it can wait. As the road signs say in NZ you are a long time dead, whats a few minutes wait. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

As said enforcing it is the issue, not a problem up here as the gentlemen in blue have very little to do except revenue generate. SWMBO uses the bloody phone constantly without BT which is fitted, I now refuse (make an excuse) to get in the car with her, only so much steering I can do from passenger side

See loads driving and on the phone up here and never hear of anyone getting done for it ,I saw my first facetime driver the other day driving up from London the guy was leaning out of his seat towards the phone on the centre console some people just need to have their licences taken away.

Worst i've seen was going round the M25 towards stansted the guy in front was weaving all over his lane so i thought i would get past him ,I looked over and he was leaning on the steering wheel with a paper notebook writing and using the automatic safety systems in the car to stop himself from crashing and keep in lane it was so tempting to just pull out in front of him and get his car to slam on the anchors .

Driving these days amazes me nearly every car come with hands free and if it doesn't it's cheap enough to have retro fitted yet people still ignore the dangers and it's not just the older generation ,there was an ad for some car the other day that reads out facebook updates I wonder how long it will be before someone has an accident updating their status L322 2008 vogue

What gets me is that they do this for mobiles but for smokers who actually have a lit fire going on in a moving vehicle there is nothing.

My 2016/66 Mustang 5.0 GT displays incoming texts on a 10" touch screen with list of canned replies...

Not sure if its a good or bad thing in terms of safety but certainly better than fiddling with a mobile especially if just glancing at the incoming text as you would the Sat Nav Map.

I personally think 6 points is not enough as it is so very dangerous. A great tip is every time before driving anywhere, put your phone in your boot to avoid the temptation of using it.

I often wonder what the rozzers would make of using a mobile phone for Sat-Nav. That's what I do, in a suction mount holder on the windscreen and like with the on board nav I never program it when on the move. With bluetooth for calls it's safe enough but I'm sure they'd make a meal of it if they could.

As for holding the phone to your ear, well I used to before bluetooth but in an automatic car with power steering I didn't have issues with that either. It's not as if I keep both hands on the wheel at all times. Never tried in a manual car so not sure how you would go about changing gear etc.

The main issue for me is texting. Never tried it personally, I can't even read incoming ones as it takes too long looking away from the road ahead. That should carry a mandatory 1 month ban IMHO. 100 quid and 6 points isn't going to hurt much but the loss of a month's salary (or a year's worth of time off) ought to liven things up a bit.

The other thing I see a lot of is suction mounted stuff right in the eye line of drivers. It looks really unsafe to have such a massive blind spot right in front of you. the car wouldn't pass an MOT like that in the same way that windscreen chips in that area are a failure. Nothing ever seems to be done about that though. I even saw a bloke with an IPAD mini for navigation and it was stuck on the windscreen right above the instrument cluster.

Of course, we (as RR drivers) do tend to see lots more being sat high up. SWMBO never notices such things in her car.

you mean a sat nav stuck right in front of the driver on the windscreen and you can watch them turn their car to match the satnav they do amaze me and yet nothing is said or done about it L322 2008 vogue

A lot of people film bad driving themselves nowadays and report it. You've got cyclists with head cams, dash cams, CCTV everywhere in some form or another, passengers with mobile phones who 'film' the actions and misdemeanours of others... And the police too... A lot of people are blatant about texting and/ or driving with a telephone stuck to their ear. It's not an uncommon sight.

There are plenty of ways for people to get caught, most people are alert to that and if they do get caught, there can be few excuses.

Make them dress in bright orange boiler suits and pick up litter at rush hour

I was in some local traffic, not moving and was resting my head on my hand, with elbow on door, like you do, and was suddenly swarmed by a pair of OAP's with high vis jackets, telling me to stop calling. one had a little camera, and was spouting off, and I was not even near the phone. they were looking for trouble...when I saw there was no police, I gave them a right mouthful.

There is so much confusion with what you can and can't do in a car. What's wrong with simply driving it. If you do that bit well enough it's plenty to keep you occupied and alert. On my commute to work I see people 'multi tasking' all the time with a coffee, food, make up, e-cigs, fags, phones, reading.....it goes on. Thing is, they could actually kill someone. Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........
