We (like many others no doubt) hit minus 11.2 degrees on Friday night.

Both the Disco (TDV6 MY2009 with 50k Miles) and the FFRR (Vogue TDV8 MY2010 with 12k Miles) definitely had a cylinder or two 'missing' on start-up.

Disco has a manual key so you have to wait for the heater light to go out before cranking but the FFRR has a start pushbutton so the computermerbob does the countdown on the heaters before cranking the engine.

Disco 'fired' straight away (so to speak) and within 20 seconds went to smooth running and the FFRR fired up well and went to smooth runnng almost instantly really. But both were definitely a 'bit rough' on the first few start seconds.

Me thinks these things are designed to work in much colder climates than this and they should not 'appear' to be missing at all

Any thoughts (or experiences) from the collective and these recent cold start events please?

Thanking all in advance.  Currently running FFRR MY10 TDV8 3.6L and a Disco 3 XS Commercial (tank like but very effective as a Company van). Plus one mint condition Track Day Car in the form of an E36 M3 3.2L Evolution circa June 1996 with lots of go faster bits and only 52k miles on the clock! Oh, plus a few bits to make it slow down really quickly as well! Luvverly.

Mine is the same, starts, just feels a bit rough.
But I'm glad it at least starts!

My 2006MY Vogue SE Supercharged is not liking the cold either. Its starts first turn but immediately dies unless you give it a touch of throttle. It is then a bit lumpy for a few minute while warming up. First few seconds it smokes just a little too.

After about 2 minutes its as sweet as a nut again but I agree its not quite right for a tough nut vehicle like the Range Rover.

I wonder if the filling stations have changed to winter fuels yet?

Not noticed any difference here, but think it's only been down to -4.
I always use the Fuel Burning Heater though when it's chilly.

Hi Gaz, don't know if it helps (sadly my LTB list is on my laptop at home)

There was a software update for the SC which dealt with the weak 'catch' on startup and rough idle for a couple of seconds. I only found it because I thought it was Voltage related but still got it after I changed my battery.

The symptoms were usually worse in cold or if it was left standing for a long period and basically on turning the key the starter would crank then the engine would hesitantly catch and huff and puff for a second or two until it settled.

May be worth a look.

Well having been out in the 110 earlier... where you have to manually hold the glow plug position for about 15 - 20 seconds before considering a very lumpy start it is still pure luxury.

You wouldn't want the 110 to get hot mind.. thay might mean the icicles hanging from the sunroof start to defrost.. and its purely condensation at that too!

If the battery hasn't gone flat (again, due to the cold and me being too lazy to replace it at the moment - the trusty MX5 and some jump leads to the rescue), my diesel takes a few more revolutions on the starter than normal to get it to fire up ( I always wait for the glow plug light to go out !), and then apart from a bit more clattering than normal from the engine, runs smoothly straight away. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

I use Wurth winter diesel additive as a precaution on both my cars. So far no problems at all, not even on initial start up...

-8 here last night and I started the TD6 without waiting on the glow plugs heating. nice and smooth on start up and no misfire
