I knew it, i damn well knew it would happen

Yesterday got the car professionally cleaned inside and out and new Pirelli's at the back in advance of a 3,000 mile pan-Europe trip on Monday. Didn't need to use the car today, but it looked so good I found an excuse to take it out for a spin. Parked up outside a post office got what I needed and was turning left heading out of the car park when I heard a gut wrenching crunch noise to my left Censored Big Cry .

I was parked next to a very low metal fence/railing and thought I'd cleared it Shocked . Have managed to get rid of the white paint from the railing with magic sponge only to reveal a dent at the back of the front passenger door and the front of the rear door, along with a nasty deep scuff on both doors plastic thing at the bottom. Gutted.

Went to my local body repair people, thinking £500-£600 as damage is not extensive and I've been quoted £250 to remove a small amount of rust from my merc with the entire wing being re-sprayed....................£1200.00 to fix Rangie!!!! Shocked
So now its off to Halfords for some spray paint as a temporary patch up until I get back from hols, pay for hols, start shelling out for xmas etc etc.

Moral: Always listen to your inner voice, its there for a reason. P.S. the wife's dulcet tones are not the inner voice I'm referring to Current:

So sorry to hear of your bad luck but it is easily done and the main thing is that it's only metal that got hurt. Enjoy the hols

Why new tyres on the rear ?
I would put a new pair on the front.

Went in for front tyres but the guy said they were ok, just a bit worn on the edges (Conti's) the rears however were bald on the inside of the tyre. Had the wheels aligned and 2 were off kilter then bought Pirelli's for the rear. Did ask them if I should put them on the front considering the route I'm taking but he said their policy is to make sure the rears are better in case of loss of traction going round a corner in wet. He did say it was up to me but I thought I'd take his advice.

As to dent a friend of mine works at Land Rover so will speak to him about who they use as he had some work done and it was nowhere near my first quote. Current:

yep thats a Censored take.....

i had the entire of 2 doors and the rear 1/4 done after someone hit the old car while it was parked up over night. 3 Panels £600, and i have had the bumper on the new one taken off repainted and refitted which is more labour and that was £270.

I think a bit of shopping around will get some better prices. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Those are the prices I was thinking of. Your bumper price was phenomenal I had someone career into me rear at some lights and both Land Rover and the Indy I use wanted £150 just to remove the bumper to see what damage had been done. Current:

Are your doors damaged, or the plastic under panels damaged.
My old 2002' when I got it, had a non matching rear door, from a poor pant match. So I bought, a whole door, secondhand, in matching original paint. £150 delivered.
My car is silver.

Yes, I've also heard the tyre experts say that new tyres should go on the rear. It seems counter-intuitive to me, but that's the prevailing wisdom.

I'd also recommend having a look for a good second hand door. It's got a proper factory paint job and it's probably cheaper. The whole things is still gutting, though. I get it.

The prevailing wisdom I think is based on the idea that better rear grip help prevent the rear end stepping out and tail spinning, which is harder to catch and control compared to understeer. V8 or else ...

great advice guys on the door didn't think about second hand one looking now. That may be the way to go as both doors got it.

Think I would definitely put the new ones on the front.
Not so worried about under steer or rear stepping out, but am concerned about braking performance. Would not want say in the wet to have the decent tyres oh the rear and ones you'll replace next month on the front.

Front tyres still have about 5mm of tread, as their continentals the outside edge has worn more than the rest of the tyre, the back ones were bald on the inside so they had to be replaced, bloody annoying as the middle again had 5mm of life. Now had wheel alignment done.

Nice to know that the dent repair need not necessarily be that much to repair so when I return from my trip a lot of phone calls to repairers will be made. Current:
