Auxiliary heater - is it worth it?

Hi.
Not had the FF long so not experienced winter driving in it. Does the Auxiliary heater make much difference and should you only use it when the forecast is for very cold weather? Does it use much fuel - if not I suppose I could just set the timer and use it every morning from November to March, but if it does I will have to be more conservative. Anybody had an FF during a really cold spell - I mean the ones where you used to see HGV drivers lighting fires under the fuel tanks? How do they cope with really cold conditions? QUID FACIUM TIBI

I used to set it to come on every morning for my commute. It was great, took the edge off and meant the screen was clear. But be careful as lots of steam and some noise come from it so if it's on a road no doubt someone will think there's a problem and report it. I always worried what it was doing to the battery (still not sure)...
Thought I would never use it, but ended up using it loads!

uses next to no fuel, so i wouldn't worry about that. I use mine on the disco every cold morning with a remote from the bedside Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Have you checked it actually works. Its a bit tricky to try in summer as the electronics won't let it turn on unless the temp is below 16deg.

If you don't do at least 15 min journey after using it then repeat uses will drain the battery, it is quite power hungry, the battery will charge obviously but if you as only doing short commutes then it will eventually not start at all. So prudent use is recommended. In really cold conditions it will take the chill off the cabin and start to defrost the screen, in cold conditions it is quite nice and toasty in the cabin. As there should also be a heated screen then it gives that a bit of a headstart.

No it won't help with the fuel turning to jelly in super cold conditions, but not a lot will..... you can't light a fire under the tank, you will just set light to the car. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

My brother (sadly no longer with us ) was a HGV diesel fitter all his working life and he always said in really cold climates an egg cup full of petrol in a lorry tank full of diesel stopped them waxing.
I know he used to put half an egg cup in his series3 Land Rover tank on cold nights so it would start OK to get him to work in the morning.
Personally I have always relied on parking in my garage and never had a problem.
