Not the bloody gearbox AGAIN !

Yes, so it seems. Was rebuilt by Mackies 4.5 years and 50,000 miles ago at 130,000.

Had the fluid and filter changed last week by my local trusted garage who pointed out the box was going to fail as the filter was clogged and the oil full of alloy particles.

I couldn't believe it but today once again after another 1000 miles, whilst pulling gently away from a junction, I felt once again that dreaded shuddering from the transmission. Only slightly but I know exactly what it is. A gearbox on its way to self destruct.

I'm absolutely gutted. The warranty was for 2 years or 100,000 miles but I always reckoned that after the rebuild, it was going to outlast the rest of the car.

To be fair to Mackies, I did drive it against their advice the first time it needed fixed for a few months after the initial symptoms started and it has been suggested this may have caused irrepairable damage. But then surely a rebuilt box is a rebuilt box and all nasties should have been replaced/repaired.

I'm thinking of pricing a new box this time. Does anyone have any advice in this or gone this route ? 2002 Vogue 4.4 V8

Well it appears a new one isn't something anyone here has approached.

So if I do another rebuild, I would think about going somewhere else. Being near Glasgow doesn't seem to give me much choice though. 2002 Vogue 4.4 V8

New one from Land Rover would be mega money I would think. I have done 92k in my S/C and the gearbox is not great and slips a bit occasionally so i know eithera rebuild pr an exchange unit from LR is on the cards soon... Alex

Has your gearbox ever had an oil/filter change or a Megaflush done? I'm thinking of getting mine done in a couple of years around the 70,000 mile mark (done 60,000 at present).

Which box is in yours? I know the TD6 was a 5 speed, not sure about pre 2006 petrols though.

Anyway, point is, if it's a ZF then there are approved ZF dealers in the UK which will rebuilt the thing properly, including servicing the Mechatronic. There will be similar for others too but my point is that way too many reconditioning places assume that if the electronics and valves are sort of working then all they need to do is fit new bearings, clutches and seals. That isn't reconditioning, it's selective rebuilding.

SWMBO's XF was diagnosed by a non-ZF centre as needing a new box and torque converter. I took it to the main ZF agent in Nottingham and they stripped and rebuilt the Mechatronic, replaced some solenoids, chemically cleaned all the oilways and valves, replaced one valve spring and changed the gear fluid. It was perfect afterwards and cost me £350. Went on to do another 35k miles before we changed the car. Still going now as far as I know.

EDIT: OK, so looks like yours is the ZF 5HP24. Have a look at the link - if it doesn't work click through from zf.com. Approved service agents in the UK.

Been in touch with RR Phil & I'm happy that's the way forward. A remanufactured ZFHP24 & TC at a good price and not too far away to collect. Thanks for all the replies. 2002 Vogue 4.4 V8

You are in very good hands there with Phil, his transmission and TC will outlast the rest of the vehicle Smile
