low range

a query for all of you that are mechanically minded...when i'm in low range and i brake i get a very loud rubbing/grinding noise, now would that be my brakes making that noise or is there a transmission brake of sorts in low range... ... - .- -.

Is this at low revs?

I found the brakes on my Td6 struggled more to stop the vehicle for the last few mph in low box due to the increased torque going through the drivetrain.

No transmission brake for low range. Only the handbrake.

i forgot to add that sometimes in normal high range i get the same noise but much quieter so what you have just said richard confirms my thoughts that the brakes need doing on the back....must be the brakes struggling with the increased torque.... btw are the shoes used when using the foot brake or only the discs... ... - .- -.

What shoes?

Only ones I was aware of are on the transmission for the handbrake.

are there not brake shoes behind the rear brake discs which i believe are adjustable via a small hole in the disc... ... - .- -.

Thinking of my Defender. Rolling Eyes
That has the handbrake on the rear of the transfer box and no rear shoes.

Correct, all the older LR models had the handbrake at the rear of the transfer box in typical LR fashion. Modern LR vehicles are as standard car set up

Even with new pads all round mine still makes a lot of noise when in low range and using the brakes.

Normally when trying to level the caravan on ramps.
